Effects of aging and reduction processes on Cr toxicity to wheat root elongation in Cr(VI) spiked soils

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the phytotoxicity to wheat root elongation in different soils across China and examined the biogeochemical processes of added Cr(VI). The results showed that soil properties, such as pH, organic matter, clay, cation exchange capacity, and amorphous Fe oxides, affected the toxicity of Cr. Wheat root elongation was found to be more sensitive to extracted Cr(VI) than Cr(III) after 105 days of incubation. A kinetic model indicated that pH, clay, and amorphous Fe/Al oxides played key roles in the aging and reduction processes of Cr(VI), while organic matter and cation exchange capacity greatly affected the aging process of Cr(III).

Enrichment and speciation of chromium during basalt weathering: Insights from variably weathered profiles in the Leizhou Peninsula, South China

Sheng-Sheng Sun et al.

Summary: Basalt-derived soils contain high levels of chromium, a heavy metal that can cause environmental concerns. This study investigated the enrichment and transformation of chromium during the basalt weathering process. It found that chromium was enriched in iron-(hydro)oxides, which are the main controlling minerals for chromium mobility in basalt-derived soils.

Cr(VI) Reduction by Siderophore Alone and in Combination with Reduced Clay Minerals

Donglei Zhang et al.

Summary: Siderophores and iron-containing clays have been found to influence the transformation of chromium. In this study, the reduction of Cr(VI) by a tri-hydroxamate siderophore alone or in combination with reduced clays was investigated. The results showed that the reduction of Cr(VI) by the siderophore involved a one-electron transfer mechanism, resulting in the formation of Cr(V) intermediate and subsequent reduction to organically complexed Cr(III). Surprisingly, the presence of both the siderophore and reduced clays led to a decrease in the rate and extent of Cr(VI) reduction compared to reduced clays alone, indicating an inhibitory effect of the interaction between the siderophore and clays.

How do drying-wetting cycles influence availability of heavy metals in sediment? A perspective from DOM molecular composition

Mei Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of drying-wetting cycles on the availability and mobility of heavy metals in sediment, focusing on the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The results show that drying-wetting cycles can promote the degradation of labile fractions of DOM and retain fractions with high aromaticity and molecular size. The decrease in the availability of Cd is closely related to changes in DOM composition, while Zn and Cu availability remains almost unchanged. These findings have implications for the environmental geochemical cycling of heavy metals in riparian sediment.

New insight for the diffusion-resupply kinetics of Cr(VI) in contaminated soil using DGT/DIFS

Bo Gao et al.

Summary: This study quantified the contributions of the soil solution and solid phase to the diffusion-resupply process of Cr(VI) in contaminated soils using DGT and a soil model. The results indicate an underestimation of the risk associated with Cr(VI) when using traditional equilibrium methods.

Mengzhuo Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of exogenous heavy metals lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) on rice growth and the accumulation of heavy metals in grains in a typical gley moist paddy soil in Zhejiang Province, China. The results demonstrated that both Pb and Cr significantly inhibited rice growth and had significant correlations with heavy metal concentrations in soil and rice grains.

Modelling evaluation of key cadmium transformation processes in acid paddy soil under alternating redox conditions

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation of Cd speciation in paddy soil under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, revealing important mechanisms such as increased adsorption on organic matter and reductive dissolution of Fe oxides. The kinetic models established for soil biogeochemical processes provided a feasible approach to predict Cd phytoavailability during the drainage phase of acid paddy field, with a stronger correlation to Cd content in rice grain than chemical extraction methods.

Chemodenitrification by Fe(II) and nitrite: Effects of temperature and dual N-O isotope fractionation

Guojun Chen et al.

Summary: Chemodenitrification between Fe(II) and nitrite, a crucial nitrogen cycling pathway, is influenced by ambient temperatures. This study analyzed dual N-O isotope fractionation to investigate the temperature-dependent reactions and found that nitrite reduction rates and N2O production increased with temperature. Different secondary minerals were identified at varying temperatures, and the isotope fractionation ratios of O to N were affected by temperature change, stressing the importance of considering temperature effects in dual NO isotope data analysis.
