Calc-Alkaline Plutons in a Proto-Tethyan Intra-Oceanic Arc (Qilian Orogen, NW China): Implications for the Construction of Arc Crust

Chao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the calc-alkaline plutons and their mafic magmatic enclaves in a Proto-Tethyan intra-oceanic arc using field investigation, petrology, geochronology, and geochemistry. The results show that these plutons were derived from subduction-metasomatized arc mantle and underwent multi-stage fractional crystallization to generate different composition. These calc-alkaline plutons are crucial for understanding the formation and evolution of continental crust.

Late Cambrian tonalite-trondhjemite association in the eastern segment of North Qilian suture zone: petrogenesis and geodynamic implications

Yuxiao Chen et al.

Summary: The late Cambrian tonalite-trondhjemite association in the eastern segment of North Qilian suture zone provides important insights into the sub-arc magmatic process and tectonic evolution, with evidence suggesting that these rocks were likely formed in a continental-arc rifting environment. The geochemical characteristics of these rocks indicate minimal contribution from the continental crust, with a common basaltic parental magma undergoing crystal fractionation in the early stage of subduction due to slab rollback.

Melting of mafic slab and mantle peridotite during ridge subduction of the Proto-Tethys Ocean (Qilian Orogen, NW China)

Jinran Qiao et al.

Summary: Ocean-ridge subduction and induced slab windows play a crucial role in the formation of arc magmatism and growth of crust. A study in Northwestern China found low Sr/Y rhyodacites and associated ophiolites, which were formed through partial melting of normal mid-ocean-ridge basalts and exhibited characteristics of blow-torch effect during ocean-ridge subduction. Harzburgites in the area were similar to abyssal peridotites and formed through the obduction of hot asthenospheric mantle. These findings provide important insights into the petrogenesis of low Sr/Y rhyodacites and shed light on the processes occurring during ridge subduction.

Boninitic blueschists record subduction initiation and subsequent accretion of an arc-forearc in the northeast Proto-Tethys Ocean

Dong Fu et al.

Summary: This study reports the discovery of early Paleozoic boninitic blueschists and associated greenschists from the eastern Proto-Tethyan North Qilian orogenic belt in northeastern Tibet. These rocks provide important insights into the initiation and subsequent subduction processes of an intra-oceanic subduction zone. The findings also highlight the role of former upper plate island arc/forearcs in reducing the preservation of initial subduction-related rock records in ancient orogenic belts.

Petrogenesis and tectonic implications of cambrian Nb-enriched I- and aluminous A-type granites in the North Qilian suture zone

Yuxiao Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents data on the middle to late Cambrian Tuole and Dabaishitou granitic plutons in the western segment of the North Qilian suture zone, showing that these granitoids crystallized at around 509-492 Ma and were mainly derived from slab-derived fluids and asthenospheric mantle melts prior to melting. The mineralogical, petrological, and geochemical features of the granitoids provide insights into the crust-mantle interaction during subduction processes.
