FROG: A global machine-learning temperature calibration for branched GDGTs in soils and peats

Pierre Vequaud et al.

Summary: The study developed a new global terrestrial brGDGT temperature calibration using a machine learning algorithm. This improved model is more accurate and robust than previous global soil calibrations, and takes into account non-linear relationships to better represent environmental complexity.

Pulsed rise and growth of the Tibetan Plateau to its northern margin since ca. 30 Ma

Weitao Wang et al.

Summary: The onset of mountain building along the margins of the Tibetan Plateau provides important constraints on the formation of the high topography in Eurasia. New evidence suggests that the Qaidam basin in the northern plateau formed later than previously thought, based on the age and provenance of Cenozoic sediments. The development of the Qilian Shan in the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau occurred in two stages, starting at around 30 Ma and 10 Ma, respectively. Widespread synchronous deformation throughout the Tibetan Plateau and its margins, around 30 Ma and 10-15 Ma, suggests that mantle lithosphere removal may have contributed to these stages of outward growth.

Tectonic degassing drove global temperature trends since 20 Ma

Timothy D. Herbert et al.

Summary: The Miocene Climatic Optimum, which occurred from 17 to 14 million years ago, was a reversal in the cooling trend during the Cenozoic era. Analyzing marine paleotemperature records and ocean crustal production rates, researchers found that the rates of crustal production had a significant impact on global temperatures, explaining the long-term ice sheet and global temperature evolution over millions of years.

Late Miocene Tarim desert wetting linked with eccentricity minimum and East Asian monsoon weakening

Junsheng Nie et al.

Summary: Periodic wetting is a common phenomenon in monsoon marginal region deserts, and previous studies have shown a correlation between desert wetting and high orbital eccentricity and strong summer monsoon. However, this study presents the first evidence of desert wetting during low orbital eccentricity, which is considered to be beyond the range of Asian monsoon precipitation. The weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon is proposed as the mechanism for this opposite desert wetting pattern.

Increasing summer precipitation in arid Central Asia linked to the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon in the recent decades

Chunzhu Chen et al.

Summary: This study reexamines water vapor sources for arid Central Asia and identifies two main sources: westerly water vapor from the North Atlantic and monsoonal water vapor from the tropical Indian Ocean and South China Sea. The monsoonal transport accounts for 81% of the total variance in precipitation variability. Weakened East Asian summer monsoon results in increased contribution of monsoonal water vapor transport, enhancing summer precipitation in arid Central Asia.

Miocene East Asia summer monsoon precipitation variability and its possible driving forces

Zhengchuang Hui et al.

Summary: A new quantitative record of East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) precipitation during the Miocene was presented using the Bayesian approach, revealing a period of stable precipitation followed by a decreasing trend, and then a significant increase around 7.4 million years ago. The gradual decrease in EASM precipitation was primarily influenced by global cooling, while the significant increase was related to the late Miocene uplift of the Tibetan Plateau.
