Methane supply drives prokaryotic community assembly and networks at cold seeps of the South China Sea

Mingyang Niu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the geochemical and microbiological profiles of sediment samples from two different cold seeps in the South China Sea. It found that prokaryotic communities in sediments with the same methane supply regimes had similar community structures. Methane supply played a key role in driving the niche partitioning of anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME). Increasing methane supply enhanced environmental selection and reduced the contributions of dispersal limitation and drift to community assembly. High methane supply promoted a more tightly connected and less stable prokaryotic network dominated by positive correlations.

Aerobic oxidation of methane significantly reduces global diffusive methane emissions from shallow marine waters

Shi-Hai Mao et al.

Summary: This study investigated methane sources and fates in the East China Sea and estimated the global rates of aerobic methane oxidation (MOx) in shallow waters using machine-learning models. The results showed that methane is produced during methylphosphonate decomposition and sedimentary release. High MOx rates were observed in productive coastal waters and were correlated with methanotrophic activity and biomass. The study estimated that aerobic methanotrophy can consume around half of the methane annually in near-shore waters, significantly reducing global methane emissions.

Contribution of deep-sourced carbon from hydrocarbon seeps to sedimentary organic carbon: Evidence from radiocarbon and stable isotope geochemistry

Dong Feng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed organic matter enclosed within seep carbonates from the Gulf of Mexico and the South China Sea to assess if sediment organic matter may be used as a proxy for methane seepage intensity. The research investigated carbon quantity, radiocarbon content, and stable carbon isotopic compositions, suggesting that seepage intensity and duration are the most important factors controlling the contribution of methane-derived carbon to the sedimentary column.

Depositional control on carbon and sulfur preservation onshore and offshore the Oujiang Estuary: Implications for the C/S ratio as a salinity indicator

Xiting Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the preservation of carbon and sulfur in estuary and shelf sediments, finding that the C/S ratio can effectively differentiate between freshwater and marine environments. It suggests a new mechanism for the influence of physical factors on carbon and sulfur preservation, providing valuable insights into sediment diagenesis related to the global biogeochemical cycle.
