Analysis of technetium immobilization and its molecular retention mechanisms by Fe(II)-Al(III)-Cl layered double hydroxide

Natalia Mayordomo et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates the retention of Fe(II)-Al(III)-Cl LDH towards pertechnetate (TcO4-), showing that Tc retention yield is higher than 80% from pH 3.5 to pH 10.5, especially at low NaCl concentrations. Molecular scale structural information on the retention mechanism is provided through a combination of vibrational and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. XANES confirms Tc(VII) reduction to Tc(IV) and consecutive Tc(IV) interaction with the solid, while EXAFS reveals two different mechanisms of Tc(IV) interaction with hematite.
