A semi-empirical force balance-based model to capture sessile droplet spread on smooth surfaces: A moving front kinetic Monte Carlo study

Donovan Chaffart et al.

Summary: This study develops a semi-empirical force balance-based moving front kinetic Monte Carlo (FB-MFkMC) model to describe droplet spreading. The model captures molecular-level events accurately and efficiently by depicting the state-by-state evolution of a sessile droplet in a stochastic manner. The movement of the droplet triple contact line is depicted using rate expressions derived based on force balance and the viscous damping force is represented using a new semi-empirical expression. The proposed approach is validated using experimental and literature data and provides insights into the behavior of the sessile droplet system.

Turning hierarchically micro-/nanostructured polypropylene surfaces robustly superhydrophobic via tailoring contact line density of mushroom-shaped nanostructure

Yanmei Zhang et al.

Summary: The application of the Cassie-Baxter equation to heterogeneous surfaces for explaining superhydrophobic phenomena is not always applicable. In this study, a two-step anodization method combined with a microstructure imprinting process was used to prepare anodized aluminum oxide templates with mushroom-shaped nanostructures and micro-/nanostructures. These templates were then used to replicate polypropylene surfaces with different hierarchical structures using compression molding. The study found that increasing the contact line density is key to improving hydrophobicity of the single-tier structure. The optimized replicas achieved higher contact angles and lower roll-off angles for the nanostructure replica, and lower contact angle hysteresis and surface adhesion force for the micro/nanostructure replica.

Numerical study of droplet evaporation on heated flat and micro-pillared hydrophobic surfaces by using the lattice Boltzmann method

Shaojun Dou et al.

Summary: The evaporation processes of sessile droplets on both heated flat and structured hydrophobic surfaces were numerically studied using a thermal multi-phase lattice Boltzmann model. The research simulated the contact-line dynamics and heat transfer during droplet evaporation, and investigated the effects of substrate heat conductivity, wettability, and roughness. It was found that the different evaporation modes of droplets on rough surfaces were due to the microscopic stick-slip motion of the contact line, with surfaces exhibiting higher hydrophobicity and smaller solid fractions more likely to undergo evaporation in the constant contact angle mode.

A computational approach to characterize formation of a passivation layer in lithium metal anodes

Niranjan Sitapure et al.

Summary: Li metal anode is crucial for advanced Lithium-ion-batteries but is hindered by uncontrollable dendrite growth. A multiscale modeling framework has been proposed to address the issue, incorporating heterogeneous SEI, dendrite-SEI interactions, and the effect of electrolyte on Li electrodeposition and dendrite formation. This computational model could be extended to various electrolytes and SEI species, providing results consistent with experimental studies.

How to Achieve a Monostable Cassie State on a Micropillar-Arrayed Superhydrophobic Surface

Liyang Huang et al.

Summary: This study explores the wetting process of superhydrophobic surfaces and reveals that the stable wetting of a trapezoidal micropillar-arrayed surface depends significantly on the apparent contact angle of single micropillars, which can be categorized into three regions and is closely related to the geometry of microstructures. These findings are supported by experimental results and numerical simulations, providing valuable insights for the precise design of functional surfaces with different wettability.
