Curcumin and colorectal cancer: An update and current perspective on this natural medicine

Wenhao Weng et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a common malignancy and its incidence is increasing worldwide. Various factors within the tumor microenvironment, such as gut microbial imbalance, impaired intestinal barrier function, and chronic inflammation, play a significant role in its pathogenesis. Curcumin, a natural medicine derived from Curcuma longa, has shown multiple anti-cancer activities and has potential as a cancer preventative and adjunct therapy for colorectal cancer.

Comparison of dialdehyde polysaccharides as crosslinkers for hydrogels: The case of poly(vinyl alcohol)

Monika Muchova et al.

Summary: Little is known about the link between the macromolecular architecture of dialdehyde polysaccharides (DAPs), their crosslinking capabilities, and the properties of resulting hydrogels. In this study, DAPs based on cellulose, dextrin, dextran, and hyaluronate were compared as crosslinkers for poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA. The study investigated the effects of crosslinker structure, molecular weight, aldehyde group density per macromolecule, and the size of spontaneously formed crosslinker nano-assemblies on the swelling, network parameters, viscoelastic properties, porosity, and cytotoxicity of PVA/DAP hydrogels. The findings reveal that crosslinkers based on linear polysaccharides perform more reliably, while the presence of branching can have both beneficial and detrimental effects at lower crosslinker concentrations.

Physical and self-crosslinking mechanism and characterization of chitosan-gelatin-oxidized guar gum hydrogel

Sayoni Maiti et al.

Summary: The formation of hydrogels relies heavily on the intricate chemistry between the constituents and efficient crosslinking methods. In this study, a hydrogel composed of chitosan, gelatin, and oxidized guar gum was fabricated using both physical and self-crosslinking approaches. Different levels of periodate oxidation were conducted, and the resulting hydrogels were characterized to compare the level of oxidized guar gum and the essential characteristics of the hydrogels, with a focus on hydrogel chemistry.
