Simulation of a Wurster fluidized bed by CFD-DEM with a cohesive contact model

Heng Li et al.

Summary: A CFD-DEM coupled with a cohesive contact model was developed to simulate a Wurster fluidized bed with heat and mass transfer. The particle temperature distribution showed two peaks, the circulation pattern significantly affected particle drying, and the liquid injection rate influenced particle circulation stability and fluidization condition.

Investigating biomass composition and size effects on fast pyrolysis using global sensitivity analysis and CFD simulations

Liqiang Lu et al.

Summary: Building an accurate universal model for biomass pyrolysis is challenging due to its sensitivity to critical material attributes such as chemical species and physical sizes. This study implemented a biomass pyrolysis kinetics in an open-source CFD software, validated against experimental data, and showed sensitivity of pyrolysis yields to feedstock compositions through a reaction scheme with heterogeneous reactions and species. The study's results can guide the development of accurate models for fast pyrolysis reactors under various operating conditions.

CFD-DEM modeling of filtered fluid-particle drag and heat transfer in bidisperse gas-solid flows

He Lei et al.

Summary: This work extends filtered models to investigate the influence of particle polydispersity on filtered fluid-particle drag and heat transfer behaviors in bidisperse systems. It is found that filtered corrections are indispensable in bidisperse systems, and the dependence of these corrections on particle size ratio and volume fraction ratio is identified. Additionally, the increase in small particle proportion generally leads to a reduction in drag and heat transfer corrections.

Conventional and data-driven modeling of filtered drag, heat transfer, and reaction rate in gas-particle flows

Li-Tao Zhu et al.

Summary: This study introduces conventional and artificial neural network-based data-driven modeling methods for modeling drag, heat transfer, and reaction rate in gas-particle flows, with a focus on the impact of various parameters. The results show that the predictive accuracy of the data-driven model is higher compared to traditional correlations, and the correction of filtered drag is related to filtered temperature difference markers, while the correction of filtered reaction rate shows weak dependence on additional markers.

Toward general regime maps for cohesive-particle flows: Force versus energy-based descriptions and relevant dimensionless groups

W. Casey Q. LaMarche et al.

Summary: The study suggests that a force-based description is more suitable for enduring-contact systems, while an energy-based description is more suitable for brief-contact systems in cohesive-particle interactions. By collapsing dimensionless variables against two dimensionless numbers, the hypothesis is supported by experimental and simulation systems, providing new insights into Geldart's classification.
