Separation of Pd(II) and Pt(IV) in concentrated hydrochloric acid using thin-layer oil membrane and comparison with conventional extraction

Dechao Xiao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new thin-layer oil membrane (TOM) extraction strategy for enhanced mutual separation of Pd(II) and Pt(IV) chlorocomplex anions. It was found that Pd(II) can be preferentially extracted even in concentrated hydrochloric acid solutions. The competitive distribution of H+ and Cl- ions at the organic-aqueous interface plays a crucial role in enhancing the separation between Pd(II) and Pt(IV).

Solvometallurgical Recovery of Platinum Group Metals from Spent Automotive Catalysts

Viet Tu Nguyen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a solvometallurgical approach for the sustainable recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from spent automotive exhaust catalysts. By investigating solvoleaching and nonaqueous solvent extraction (NASX), effective separation and purification of palladium, platinum, and rhodium were achieved. The closed-loop solvoleaching process using less-hazardous chemicals reduces environmental impacts and waste generation, while NASX with an ionic liquid offers a more sustainable alternative for PGMs separation.

Study on the interfacial behaviors for extraction of heavy rare earths with PC-88A: A new strategy of thin oil film extraction

Na Sui et al.

Summary: A new thin oil film extraction strategy was proposed for selective recovery of rare earth ions with extremely low concentrations in leaching solutions of ion-adsorption type rare earth ores. The extraction behavior of rare earth ions in the oil film extraction system is closely related to the interfacial behavior of the extractant molecule. This study provides a theoretical basis for developing a new method to enhance the extraction and separation of rare earth ions from low-concentration solutions.
