Thermal Runaway of Lithium-Ion Batteries Employing Flame-Retardant Fluorinated Electrolytes

Junxian Hou et al.

Summary: This study finds that while flame-retardant fluorinated electrolytes help reduce the flammability of lithium-ion batteries, they still undergo thermal runaway and exhibit a different pathway compared to batteries using conventional electrolytes. The reduction in fluorinated components in fully lithiated graphite leads to a significant release of heat, triggering chain reactions.

Supramolecular flame-retardant electrolyte enables safe and stable cycling of lithium-ion batteries

Xiaoxia Chen et al.

Summary: Although the energy densities of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are increasing, safety issues such as fires and explosions remain a major concern. Previous research focused on the flammable liquid carbonate solvents as the main cause of fire, but this approach has proven to be inferior. Through careful examination, it was discovered that the jet fire caused by flammable gases inside batteries is critical to the fire hazard. Therefore, the focus should shift towards finding additives that can suppress gaseous-type fires. A new supramolecular electrolyte was rationally designed to address this challenge by self-assembling gaseous-type fire suppressants with SEI&CEI improvers. This design not only improved the cycling stability of the battery, but also significantly decreased the self-extinguish time of the electrolyte, effectively suppressing the jet fire and preventing further combustion during thermal runaway.
