Revisiting pesticide pollution: The case of fluorinated pesticides

Diogo A. M. Alexzandrino et al.

Summary: Fluorinated pesticides have gained significant market share in the agrochemical sector due to the approval of new fluoroorganic ingredients in the past two decades. However, there is lack of a comprehensive scientific and regulatory framework to address their potential negative impacts. Further research and discussion are needed to differentiate between the safety and hazards associated with fluorinated pesticides.

Polystyrene-based nanospheres with controllable microstructures for exceptional solid phase microextraction of organic pollutants

Luyi Chen et al.

Summary: Systematic investigation on the adsorption performance of polystyrene-based nanospheres towards persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is crucial for high-capacity adsorbent design and toxicological risk assessment. In this study, a series of polystyrene-based nanospheres with controllable microstructures were successfully constructed as model adsorbents. It was found that F-functionalized nanospheres (xFFNs) demonstrated better enrichment effects towards PCBs due to stronger sigma (σ)-hole interactions. The xFFNs-coated SPME fiber showed excellent enrichment performance for PCBs, with detection limits of 0.08-0.89 ng L-1 for trace PCB quantification in treated sewage samples.

Fluorine-Functionalized Covalent-Organic-Framework-Coated Stir Bar for the Extraction of Benzoylurea Insecticides in Pear Juice and Beverage Followed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Ultraviolet Detection

Lijuan Zang et al.

Summary: A fluorinated covalent organic framework (F-COF) was successfully synthesized and demonstrated excellent performance in the extraction of fluorinated insecticides. Stir bars coated with F-COF showed higher extraction recovery and shorter extraction time compared to commercial stir bars. The adsorption behavior of the insecticides on F-COF was investigated, and a method combining stir bar sorptive extraction with liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection was developed for trace analysis of the insecticides.
