Construction of high-density proton transport channels in phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole membranes using ionic liquids and metal-organic frameworks

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: Introducing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into phosphoric acid (PA) doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes to form proton transfer channels reduces dependence on PA for proton conductivity. However, excessive MOF loading leads to reduced mechanical properties and damaged membrane structure. Ionic liquids (ILs) can improve interface performance and are introduced into the branched poly[2,2'- (p-oxydiphenylene)-5,5' benzimidazole] (BOPBI) cross-linked by KH-560. The composite system of the cross-linked BOPBI (CBOPBI)@MOF with IL exhibits improved interface performance and acceptable mechanical properties.

Tro?ger's Base (TB)-Based Polyimides as Promising Heat-Insulating and Low-K Dielectric Materials

Jian Lu et al.

Summary: The correlations between the molecular structures of Tro''ger's base-based polyimides (PIs) and physical properties including thermal conductivity and dielectric properties were investigated. The introduction of Tro''ger's base units effectively reduced the chain orientation and increased the fractional free volume, resulting in low dielectric constants and thermal conductivity values for the PI films. The incorporation of Tro''ger's base units also improved the molecular weights, toughness, and glass-transition temperature of the PIs.

Recent Advances in Polybenzimidazole Membranes for Hydrogen Purification

Johannes H. Bitter et al.

Summary: In recent decades, hydrogen has gained renewed and growing interest worldwide as a high-quality and renewable energy carrier, thanks to advances in fuel cells and increasing environmental concerns. Steam reforming of fossil-based resources is currently the main method for hydrogen production, but it generates large amounts of greenhouse gases including CO2, which must be captured to fully exploit the potential of hydrogen. Membrane separation technology has seen significant growth, breakthroughs, and advancements, and it could be the key component in achieving inexpensive and highly pure hydrogen. Polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based membranes have shown excellent stability and selectivity, making them suitable for the development of industrially applicable hydrogen-selective membranes.

Summary: Phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole membranes with side chains of benzimidazole group exhibit excellent properties in terms of doping level of phosphoric acid, retention stability of phosphoric acid, and proton conductivity under certain mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, and thermal stability. The performance of the grafted membrane is mainly improved by increasing the free volume of the polymer membrane, enhancing the binding energy, and densifying the hydrogen bond network structure between the polymer membrane and phosphoric acid. Adjusting the length of the side chain and the number of benzimidazole groups allows for precise control of phosphoric acid retention stability and proton conductivity.
