Function of aquatic plants on nitrogen removal and greenhouse gas emission in enhanced denitrification constructed wetlands: Iris pseudacorus for example

Xushun Gu et al.

Summary: Aquatic plants play a crucial role in nitrogen removal and greenhouse gas emission in wetlands, enhancing denitrification and reducing greenhouse gas release. The addition of organics can improve nitrogen removal efficiency in plant wetlands, and plants help maintain the abundance of ammonia oxidation bacteria through oxygen transport.

Spatiotemporal dynamic changes of antibiotic resistance genes in constructed wetlands and associated influencing factors*

Ling Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explored the spatiotemporal dynamics of sulfonamide antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in vertical upflow subsurface flow constructed wetlands (VUSFCW). The results showed that the distribution of ARGs varied among different layers, with the bottom layer being the main stage of removal. Physical-chemical factors, microorganisms, and antibiotics indirectly influenced the distribution of ARGs through mobile genetic elements. Potential host species of ARGs were more abundant in summer compared to winter. VUSFCW showed effectiveness in reducing the abundance of ARGs and the risk of pathogens carrying ARGs.

Mangrove restoration promotes the anti-scouribility of the sediments by modifying inherent microbial community and extracellular polymeric substance

Zhimao Mai et al.

Summary: This study found that mangrove restoration significantly enhances sediment anti-scouribility and promotes EPS content in sediments, with extracellular protein and polysaccharide positively correlated with anti-scouribility. The increased bacterial abundances in sediments after mangrove restoration, especially Kandelia obovata, suggest Proteobacteria and Bacteroides may play important roles in EPS secretion and anti-scouribility promotion. Additionally, the increase in total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus induced by mangrove restoration may contribute to the improvement of sediment anti-scouribility.

Antibiotic resistance gene profile in aerobic granular reactor under antibiotic stress: Can eukaryotic microalgae act as inhibiting factor?

Lin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of eukaryote microalgae on the antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) profile of symbiotic bacteria. The results show that the symbiosis of microalgae can decrease the abundance of ARGs in bacteria, and there is a strong correlation between ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs).

Modeling the impacts of plants and internal organic carbon on remediation performance in the integrated vertical flow constructed wetland

Xiaoyu Ma et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the integrated vertical flow constructed wetland has favorable performance in removing ammonia and total nitrogen, with significant effects of vegetation on treatment efficiency. Oxygen loss and organic carbon release from plant roots play crucial roles in the treatment processes.

Novel sequential flow baffled microalgal-bacterial photobioreactor for enhancing nitrogen assimilation into microalgal biomass whilst bioremediating nutrient-rich wastewater simultaneously

Wai Hong Leong et al.

Summary: The novel SFB-AlgalBac photobioreactor was found to perform optimally at an influent flow rate of 5.0 L/d, achieving the highest microalgal nitrogen assimilation rate and biomass productivity. Increasing the flow rate to 10.0 L/d reduced the reactor's performance and resulted in differences in microalgal biomass per unit of nitrogen assimilated between the two flow rates. Additionally, prior influent treatment by activated sludge improved microalgal biomass settleability by releasing extracellular polymeric substances.
