Bio-based solvents for polyolefin dissolution and membrane fabrication: from plastic waste to value-added materials

Malinalli Ramirez-Martinez et al.

Summary: Membrane technology is an efficient industrial separation process that has a small environmental footprint. To enhance sustainability in the chemical industry, it is important to consider the circular economy principles when designing membranes, including the use of renewable sources, solvents, and recycling strategies. Recycling plastic waste into separation membranes can help mitigate the environmental impact of plastic pollution.

Rapid hydrolysis of PET in high-concentration alcohol aqueous solution by pore formation and spontaneous separation of terephthalate

Xiong-Lei Wang et al.

Summary: A high-concentration ethanol aqueous solution of 90 vol% is used to achieve high-efficiency hydrolysis of waste PET and recovery of TPA. The hydrolysis system shows simplicity, high efficiency, and eco-friendliness, with over 98% TPA recovery. The TPA is precipitated automatically and separated by filtration, avoiding the generation of a large amount of wastewater and acid in the following neutralization process.

Optimisation of PET glycolysis by applying recyclable heterogeneous organocatalysts

Zsuzsanna Feher et al.

Summary: Chemical depolymerisation is a sustainable plastic recycling method that can achieve a circular economy by recovering pure monomers. In this study, commercially available organocatalyst-modified silica gels and functionalized silica gel were tested for the glycolysis of PET. The reaction was optimized and the recyclability of the catalysts was evaluated. The results showed that the modified silica gels had higher catalytic activities and achieved a high yield of monomers, making them a promising solution for PET waste management.

Unveiling the mechanism of N-methylation of indole with dimethylcarbonate using either DABCO or DBU as catalyst

Pedro H. Vendramini et al.

Summary: The N-methylation of indole with dimethylcarbonate produces different products depending on the catalyst used. Direct ESI(+)-MS monitoring allows for the interception and characterization of key intermediates in the reaction process. Contrasting mechanisms are observed in the reaction of DMC with indole under either DABCO or DBU catalysis.

Systems level roadmap for solvent recovery and reuse in industries

Emmanuel A. Aboagye et al.

Summary: Recovering waste solvent for reuse is a great alternative for improving industrial greenness, but designing recovery processes systematically can be challenging due to the complexities associated with waste stream composition, techno-economic analysis, and environmental assessment. Furthermore, challenges in meeting product specifications may hinder the promotion of solvent recovery and reuse practices.
