Electrosorption Integrated with Bipolar Membrane Water Dissociation: A Coupled Approach to Chemical-free Boron Removal

Sohum K. Patel et al.

Summary: The study introduces a novel electrosorption-based boron removal technology using a bipolar membrane (BPM) between porous carbon electrodes, showing its potential to overcome the limitations of current methods. The mechanism of boron removal is confirmed to be electrosorption rather than adsorption. The effect of applied voltage on the process efficiency is evaluated, and the BPM-electrosorption system is compared with flow-through electrosorption, demonstrating advantages in boron sorption capacity and energy consumption. Overall, the BPM-electrosorption system shows promising boron removal capability.

Boron Removal from Reverse Osmosis Permeate Using an Electrosorption Process: Feasibility, Kinetics, and Mechanism

Jingyi Sun et al.

Summary: An asymmetric flow-by electrosorption system was proposed for effective boron removal from solutions. Through water electrolysis and other reactions, boron acid was removed from the solution with high removal efficiency. The system is also capable of treating high concentrations of boron and solutions containing multiple competing ionic species.

Boron and salt ion transport in electrically assisted reverse osmosis

Xian Bao et al.

Summary: The novel electrically assisted reverse osmosis (EARO) process significantly enhances boron removal efficiency by increasing pH near the RO membrane surface, but the variation of salt ion rejection is marginal with increasing applied voltages. This study demonstrates that EARO has the potential for low-cost and low-chemical boron removal in one-pass seawater desalination.

Electrochemical removal of amphoteric ions

Amit N. Shocron et al.

Summary: Harmful or valuable ionic species in seawater, brackish water, and wastewater are often amphoteric, weak acids or bases, making their removal challenging for conventional membrane technologies. Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging membraneless technique that shows potential for removing pH-dependent species without chemical dosing, but its development is hindered by the complexities of pH dynamics and ion properties in a charging CDI cell. This study presents a theoretical framework for predicting the electrosorption of pH-dependent species in CDI cells and highlights counterintuitive design rules for efficient removal of amphoteric species like boron.
