The relationship between public acceptance of nuclear power generation and spent nuclear fuel reuse: Implications for promotion of spent nuclear fuel reuse and public engagement

Seungkook Roh et al.

Summary: This article highlights the indispensability of nuclear energy sources in achieving a carbon neutral economy, emphasizing the crucial role of public opinion due to the potential catastrophic consequences of nuclear accidents. It discusses the importance of discussing spent nuclear fuel as a prerequisite for expanding nuclear energy and addressing the issue of radioactive waste disposal. By analyzing news articles and public comments data, the study reveals that the Korean public is more interested in nuclear energy policy than in spent nuclear fuel itself, and that alternative energy sources influence their position on spent nuclear fuel.

Achieving enhanced mechanical properties of SiC/Al-Cu nanocomposites via simultaneous solid-state alloying of Cu and dispersing of SiC nanoparticles

X. M. Mei et al.

Summary: SiC/Al-Cu nanocomposites were successfully fabricated via simultaneous solid-state alloying of Cu and dispersing of SiC nanoparticles in Al matrix for the first time. The nanocomposites exhibited excellent mechanical properties at both room temperature and high temperatures, as well as enhanced high-temperature creep resistance. The outstanding performance of the nanocomposites can be attributed to the synergy of solid-solution strengthening and Orowan strengthening. This study demonstrates the high efficiency of the ARB-induced matrix alloying and dispersing of nanoparticles in optimizing the microstructure and mechanical performances of Al matrix composites.

Maximizing the mechanical performance of Ti3AlC2-based MAX phases with aid of machine learning

Xingjun Duan et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel strategy based on the crystal graph convolution neural network (CGCNN) model has been successfully employed to tune the mechanical properties of Ti3AlC2-based MAX phases. The structure-property correlation between A-site substitution and mechanical properties of Ti-3(Al(1-x)A(x))C-2 is established. The results show that the thermodynamic stability, stiffness, thermal shock resistance, and plasticity of Ti3AlC2 can be improved by the substitution of different elements, providing universal guidance for the synthesis of high-performance MAX phases.

Direct energy deposition of SiC reinforced Ti-6Al-4V metal matrix composites: Structure and mechanical properties

Svetlana A. Shalnova et al.

Summary: The creation of metal matrix composites is an important strategy to obtain heat-resistant products with improved mechanical, high-temperature, and tribo-logical properties. This paper investigates the structure, phase composition, and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V/SiC MMCs produced by direct energy deposition. The results show that increasing the SiC content leads to higher hardness but weaker strength of the samples.

Mechanical properties of SiC and neem leaf powder reinforced Al-6063 hybrid metal matrix composites

Sachin Tejyan et al.

Summary: In this study, aluminum alloy-based metal matrix composites were fabricated using stir casting method. SiC and neem leaf ash powders were used as reinforcement materials. The addition of SiC and neem leaf ash powders resulted in increased tensile strength, impact strength, and hardness for all composites. The composite reinforced with 6% SiC powder and 4% neem leaf ash showed the highest tensile strength, hardness, and impact strength.
