Effect of CaCO3 on volatilization of self-reduced zinc from blast furnace dust

Wei-an Wang et al.

Summary: Through high-temperature reduction experiments, it was found that adding CaCO3 can improve the reduction rate of zinc in blast furnace dust, especially at lower temperatures. The decomposition of CaCO3 generates CO2 and CO, which provide more reducing agents and enhance the zinc removal rate in the entire reduction system.

ZnO and MgO as inducers of spinel-like phase formation on alumina-based castables

O. H. Borges et al.

Summary: This study compares the application of gahnite and its MgO counterpart in alumina-based castables. The results show that gahnite formation occurs at lower temperatures, allowing for lower temperature firing. However, the faster formation rate of gahnite leads to changes in pore distribution, negatively affecting some mechanical properties of the castable.

Zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) refractory aggregates: Dilatometric sintering studies and thermal expansion coefficient

Somnath Mandal et al.

Summary: ZnAl2O4 has been found to enhance the thermomechanical properties and slag corrosion resistance of refractory castables. However, the generation of pores and deleterious expansion during its in situ formation can limit its amount in refractory compositions. This study presents a comprehensive dilatometric investigation, identifying the optimal raw materials and processing conditions. It was found that the preformed ZnAl2O4 refractory aggregates synthesized from industrial ZnO and reactive Al2O3 through two-stage firing exhibited 0% open porosity. The ZnAl2O4 powder calcined at 1050°C also showed good sinterability and a similar thermal expansion coefficient to other commonly used refractory materials.
