Strongly enhanced piezocatalysis of BiFeO3/ZnO heterostructure nanomaterials

Qichang Zhang et al.

Summary: The construction of heterostructures is considered a great method to improve the decomposition ratio in piezocatalysis. BiFeO3/ZnO heterostructure nanomaterials synthesized through a mixing-calcining method show enhanced piezocatalysis performance by utilizing vibration energy to decompose Rhodamine B dye. The heterostructures are able to decompose 73.4%, 87.0%, 96.9%, 92.9%, 67.9%, and 55.1% of Rhodamine B dye with different ZnO contents of 0 wt%, 1 wt%, 2 wt%, 3 wt%, 4 wt%, and 5 wt% respectively after 180 minutes of vibration. The enhanced piezocatalytic dye decomposition is attributed to the effective separation of positive and negative charges in the heterostructure.
