Microwave assisted ultrafast immobilization of CuO nanostructures in paper matrices for antimicrobial applications

Sudiksha Aggrawal et al.

Summary: In this study, CuO nanoflakes with dimensions of 50-150 nm x 200 nm were successfully immobilized on cellulose fibers using an ultrafast microwave assisted method. The high retention rate of CuO up to 70% without the use of any linker, binder, or retention aid is remarkable. The research also demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of CuO immobilized paper matrices.

Montmorillonite clay and quaternary ammonium silane-reinforced pullulan/agar-based nanocomposites and their properties for packaging applications

Balasubramanian Rukmanikrishnan et al.

Summary: The synergistic combinations of pullulan, agar, montmorillonite (MMT) clay, and quaternary ammonium silane (QAS) in the active nanocomposites showed improved properties in terms of UV transmittance, thermal and mechanical properties, and antimicrobial activity. The concentration of MMT clay played a crucial role in the properties of the nanocomposites, while the addition of long alkyl chain in QAS enhanced the hydrophobic nature of the composites. Synergistic effects were observed in rheological properties with the combination of Pullulan/agar/MMT clay/QAS.

Antimicrobial Hybrid Coatings Combining Enhanced Biocidal Activity under Visible-Light Irradiation with Stimuli-Renewable Properties

Theodore Manouras et al.

Summary: Hybrid, organic-inorganic, biocidal films with polishing properties were developed for effective, long-lasting antimicrobial surface coatings. The films showed effective biocidal activity both in the dark and under visible-light irradiation, with a gradual decrease in thickness under different pH conditions while retaining antimicrobial action. The proposed approach allows for the development of highly functional coatings with biocompatibility and bactericidal action, featuring a self-clean mechanism for prolonged antimicrobial efficacy.

Incorporation of Antimicrobial Bio-Based Carriers onto Poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) Surface for Enhanced Antimicrobial Activity

Kang Huang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of a biobased food grade modification approach to reduce microbial contamination and improve produce safety in the food processing industry. By immobilizing food grade yeast cell wall particles on a model plastic film, the modified plastic films showed enhanced antimicrobial properties, improved chlorine binding, extended stability of chlorine, and increased rechargeability. These modifications were effective in inactivating bacteria, reducing cross-contamination, and inhibiting biofilm formation on the film surface, showcasing the potential for application in food safety measures.

Long-Chained Pyridinium N-Chloramines: Synthesis and Remarkable Biocidal Efficacies for Antibacterial Application

Lingdong Li et al.

Summary: Two types of long-chained pyridinium N-chloramines were designed and synthesized by covalently linking a N-chloramine unit and a long intact alkyl chain via varied alkylation of 3-hydroxypyridine. Preliminary antibacterial tests showed that both synthetic pyridinium N-chloramines exhibited significantly enhanced bactericidal efficacy compared to previously reported ones lacking a long chain. This enhanced bactericidal behavior was likely due to the 'synergistic' biocidal action between the N-chloramine moiety and the long-chained pyridinium moiety.
