The Chinese pine genome and methylome unveil key features of conifer evolution

Shihui Niu et al.

Summary: This study provides important resources and insights into conifer evolution and further research on conifer adaptation and development. The researchers found that the large genome size of conifers is mainly due to intergenic regions and transposable element content. Large genes with long introns exhibit higher expression levels. Additionally, the expansion of gene families in conifers is mainly related to stress responses.

A thorough annotation of the krill transcriptome offers new insights for the study of physiological processes

Ilenia Urso et al.

Summary: The krill species Euphausia superba plays a critical role in the Antarctic ecosystem, but climate changes have already affected its distribution and reproductive dynamics. In this study, we identified genes involved in the krill moulting cycle, reproductive process, and sexual maturation, and discovered previously unknown differentially expressed genes related to cuticle development and energy storage. We also expanded our knowledge of the krill opsin repertoire by finding new opsin sequences. Furthermore, we created the KrillDB(2) database, which provides comprehensive information on krill genes, expression profiles, and differential expression.

Seasonal gene expression profiling of Antarctic krill in three different latitudinal regions

Flavia Hoering et al.

Summary: Antarctic krill exhibit seasonal differences in gene expression across different latitudinal regions, with most genes up-regulated in summer krill. The South Georgia region shows less pronounced seasonal differences, possibly due to milder conditions at lower latitudes. Krill in the South Orkneys/Bransfield Strait and Lazarev Sea regions enter a state of metabolic depression and regressed development in winter, driven by a photoperiodic timing system.

Giant lungfish genome elucidates the conquest of land by vertebrates

Axel Meyer et al.

Summary: Lungfishes, belonging to lobe-fined fish, possess a chromosome-quality genome with a vast size attributed to huge intergenic regions, introns with high repeat content, and active transposable elements. Phylogenomic analyses confirm lungfishes' key evolutionary position as the closest living relatives to tetrapods. Their preadaptations to living on land, increased rates of evolution, and duplication of genes associated with obligate air-breathing contribute to their tetrapod-like biology. These findings advance our understanding of the major transition during vertebrate evolution.

African lungfish genome sheds light on the vertebrate water-to-land transition

Kun Wang et al.

Summary: A chromosome-level assembly of the African lungfish genome was reported, revealing that the large size of the lungfish genome is mainly due to retrotransposons. The study showed that lungfishes have evolved high transcription efficacy to keep gene expression balanced, and identified potential genes and regulatory elements related to terrestrial adaptation traits.

Simple sequence repeats drive genome plasticity and promote adaptive evolution in penaeid shrimp

Jianbo Yuan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the role of simple sequence repeats (SSRs) in the evolution of the genomes of two penaeid shrimp species, Fenneropenaeus chinensis and Litopenaeus vannamei. They observed a significant expansion in SSRs in the genomes of these species (similar to 23%) compared what is seen in other animal genomes (similar to 1%) and suggest a possible mechanistic relationship between SSRs and transposable elements.

The giant axolotl genome uncovers the evolution scaling, and transcriptional control of complex gene loci

Siegfried Schloissnig et al.

Summary: This study presents the chromosome-scale assembly of the giant axolotl genome, revealing insights on how chromosomal organization scales with genome expansion. Analysis of the assembly sheds light on the evolution of large, syntenic multigene clusters and the functional regulatory landscape. The axolotl serves as a primary model for studying successful regeneration.

Antarctic surface temperature and elevation during the Last Glacial Maximum

Christo Buizert et al.

Summary: Water-stable isotopes in polar ice cores are widely used as a temperature proxy in paleoclimate reconstruction, but calibration remains challenging in East Antarctica. This study reconstructed the surface cooling during the Last Glacial Maximum in Antarctica using borehole thermometry and firn properties, finding that West Antarctic sites cooled by about 10 degrees C relative to the preindustrial period, while East Antarctic sites showed a cooling range from about 4 degrees to 7 degrees C.

Robert R. Fitak

Summary: The study shows that inferring the optimal number of migration events in population trees can be achieved by examining the second-order rate of change in likelihood (Δm), which performs equally well as current recommendations for Treemix. This method may be preferable in large, complex population histories.
