Effect of tillage and crop type on soil respiration in a long-term field experiment on chernozem soil under temperate climate

Gy Gelybo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of soil tillage and crop type on soil respiration in a typical Central European agricultural site with crop rotation. Results showed that soil respiration was significantly higher under no-tillage treatment compared to mouldboard ploughing, particularly for summer crops. Differences in soil water content could contribute to this variation. Six models were tested to simulate soil respiration, with Normalized Difference Vegetation Index improving model performance. Specific models for different crops and treatments were recommended to enhance accuracy and reduce uncertainty.

How will a drier climate change carbon sequestration in soils of the deciduous forests of Central Europe?

Istvan Fekete et al.

Summary: The study shows that as the climate becomes drier, the soil biological activity decreases in Hungarian oak forests, leading to an increase in organic carbon storage. While the soil organic carbon concentration is lower in humid forests, the transfer efficiency of C is higher, and degradation processes are faster.

Estimating soil organic carbon stock change at multiple scales using machine learning and multivariate geostatistics

Gabor Szatmari et al.

Summary: This study used geostatistical methods and machine learning to predict SOC stock change in Hungary at different scales and quantified the associated uncertainties. Results showed that predictions and uncertainties of average SOC stock change were smaller for larger spatial supports, and spatial aggregation facilitated obtaining statistically significant SOC stock changes.

Carbon sequestration of forest soils is reflected by changes in physicochemical soil indicators - A comprehensive discussion of a long-term experiment on a detritus manipulation

Katalin Juhos et al.

Summary: The long-term detritus manipulation study in a Central-European forest site revealed significant impact of detritus input treatments on soil organic carbon and almost all soil physicochemical indicators within the upper 15 cm layer. This site is unique due to its high clay content and dry climate, suggesting the importance of potential cation exchange capacity and base saturation in predicting carbon sequestration mechanisms. It is recommended to include these parameters in current soil organic carbon models.

Global Prediction of Soil Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity Using Random Forest in a Covariate-Based GeoTransfer Function (CoGTF) Framework

Surya Gupta et al.

Summary: Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) is a critical soil hydraulic parameter representing infiltration and drainage in land surface models. A new global Ksat map at 1 km resolution was derived by utilizing machine learning and remotely sensed information, showing distinct spatial patterns of soil formation processes. The validation of the model emphasizes the need for additional Ksat values to improve predictions, highlighting the shift towards considering more factors in Ksat estimation beyond just soil texture-based methods.

Do moisture conservation practices influence stability of soil organic carbon and structure?

Avijit Ghosh et al.

Summary: The study showed that in degraded lands facing water scarcity in the tropics, using staggered contour trenches or continuous contour trenches as soil water conservation measures can effectively reduce soil erosion, improve soil structural stability, enhance organic carbon concentration, and increase biological activities, promoting crop yield and water productivity.

Long-term effects of conservation tillage on soil erosion in Central Europe: A random forest-based approach

Balazs Madarasz et al.

Summary: Conservation tillage (CT) is crucial for food security, soil conservation, and sustainable development. A long-term study in southwest Hungary showed that CT significantly increased soil stability, organic matter, and earthworm abundance, while reducing surface runoff and soil loss. The Random Forest model was effective in predicting erosion risk, with tillage type being the most important factor. The study suggests that CT can help maintain precipitation on arable land and minimize soil loss to tolerable levels.

Quentin Styc et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a method for mapping Soil Available Water Capacity (SAWC) that could predict SAWC values at different maximum rooting depths and their uncertainties. By considering the correlations between soil layer errors, the accuracy of SAWC predictions and uncertainty estimates was improved.

Particulate organic matter as a functional soil component for persistent soil organic carbon

Kristina Witzgall et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of soil structure on the fate of litter-derived organic matter, finding that organic matter on litter surfaces is occluded into aggregates and forms organo-mineral associations regardless of soil structure. These processes occur at plant-soil interfaces, highlighting the importance of plant litter in soil carbon persistence.
