Organic carbon rich-soils in the brazilian semiarid region and paleoenvironmental implications

Jose Joao Lelis Leal de Souza et al.

Summary: This study describes the high SOC soils in the semiarid Borborema Plateau in Brazil and discusses the soil-forming processes and landscape evolution. These soils with high SOC content represent hotspots in the semiarid region and protect relic vegetation from wetter paleoenvironments.

Post-rift geomorphological evolution of a passive continental margin (Paraiba region, northeastern Brazil): Insights from river profile and drainage divide analysis

Fabio Correa Alves et al.

Summary: The post-rift erosional history of elevated passive continental margins has been studied in the northeastern Brazilian region, revealing variations in tectonic styles, timing and rates. This study focuses on the Paraiba region, investigating the transient fluvial landscape responses to Quaternary tectonic uplift. The results show non-linear river profiles, migration of knickpoints and incised channels, supporting the hypothesis of increased tectonics during the Late Quaternary.

The Brazilian Midwest lateritic domains: Regolith features and dynamic

Rodrigo Tokuta Castro et al.

Summary: Intracontinental deformations cause the uplift of erosive surfaces in by destabilizing the lithosphere in cratonic domains. The opening of the Atlantic Ocean has influenced processes 2000 km away from the coast, leading to the formation of different regolith surfaces in the Brazilian Midwest. These surfaces are characterized by unique features such as quartzite mountains, ferruginous lateritic duricrusts, and lowlands. The study aimed to understand the formation of these surfaces and their relationships, as well as the impact of lateritic dynamics and continental influences as landscape-shaping agents.

Termite flights seasonally promote nutrient pulses in the Caatinga dry forest in northeastern Brazil

Israel S. Silva et al.

Summary: The study estimated the nutrient yields transferred at ground level from termite dispersion flights in the Caatinga dry forest of Brazil. It found that alates flights transfer nutrients to the soil, providing a seasonal pulse of nutrients that plays an important role in the ecosystem of the semiarid region. However, anthropogenic disturbances and changes in climate may impact termite populations, affecting the seasonal pulses of nutrient release.

Pedogeomorphology and paleoenvironmental implications of large termite mounds at the Brazilian semiarid landscape

Diana F. de Freitas et al.

Summary: The large termite mounds in Brazil were found to have formed after the mid Holocene, possibly even older. These mounds are the result of cumulative termite activity, unrelated to soils or parent material. Due to their high soil production rates, they have created a thick soil mantle in the range of 270-660 cm over the past 10,000 years.
