Internal donors on supported Ziegler Natta catalysts for isotactic polypropylene: a brief tutorial review

Bharat R. Paghadar et al.

Summary: The review focuses on the challenges in polyolefin synthesis, specifically in attaining stereoregular polypropylene (PP) with the aid of various internal donors (ID). It discusses the various generations of Ziegler-Natta (ZN) catalyst systems, comparative studies between different donor classes, and the effects of mixed donor approaches on polymer properties. The review also emphasizes on the opportunity for young minds and researchers to create new polymeric materials with useful properties by incorporating new IDs for further enhancement of stereo regularity in polymers.

Formation of Highly Active Ziegler-Natta Catalysts Clarified by a Multifaceted Characterization Approach

Alessandro Piovano et al.

Summary: The formation of nanosized and defective b-MgCl2 in Ziegler-Natta catalysts was investigated using a variety of characterization techniques, revealing that the addition of TiCl4 and an internal donor such as dibutyl phthalate (DBP) play crucial roles in the reconstruction and growth of MgCl2 seeds. The complex interactions between TiClx(OEt)(4-x) and DBP were studied, shedding light on the catalytic activity of the catalyst during the preparation process. This multifaceted approach provided deep insights into the industrial catalyst preparation method.

Mechanistic Study on Effect of Electron Donors in Propylene Polymerization Using the Ziegler-Natta Catalyst

Xing Guo et al.

Summary: TiCl4/MgCl2 catalysts are the main industrial catalysts for isotactic polypropylene, but the mechanism is not fully understood. Different electron donors can promote the activity of the Ti active site and maintain regioselectivity. In some cases, specific donors can enhance the stereoselectivity in isotactic polymerization.

Electronic Properties of Ti Sites in Ziegler-Natta Catalysts

Alessandro Piovano et al.

Summary: Although Ziegler-Natta (ZN) catalysts are crucial in the polyolefin market, a comprehensive understanding of their properties at the molecular level is still lacking. This study uses UV-vis and Ti L-2,L-3-edge near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopies, along with theoretical simulations, to investigate the electronic properties of three ZN precatalysts and their corresponding catalysts activated by triethylaluminum (TEAl). The research provides evidence for the presence of monomeric 6-fold-coordinated Ti4+ species in all precatalysts, sheds light on the correlation between Ti site electron density and olefin insertion activation energy, and demonstrates the impact of effective charge on the Ti sites on olefin pi-complexation.
