Biomass-Derived Carbon Materials in Heterogeneous Catalysis: A Step towards Sustainable Future

Apoorva Shetty et al.

Summary: Biomass-derived carbons have unique physical and chemical properties, such as tunable surface, chemical inertness, and hydrophobicity, which make them ideal candidates to be used as heterogeneous catalysts and catalytic supports. The wide range of reactions that can be compatible with biomass-derived carbon materials includes organic transformations, electrocatalytic reactions, and photocatalytic reactions. This review discusses the uses of biomass-derived materials in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, highlighting the importance and unique properties of carbon materials derived from biomass as potential catalysts.

HMF hydrogenolysis over carbon-supported Ni-Cu catalysts to produce hydrogenated biofuels

Nerea Viar et al.

Summary: In this study, catalysts supported on biomass-derived carbon were used for the hydrogenolysis of HMF to produce DMF and DMTHF in a continuous flow reactor. The carbon-supported catalysts showed good activity and selectivity, outperforming commercial carbon-supported catalysts in terms of selectivity and stability.

A comparison of Structure-Activity of Cu-Modified Over Different Mesoporous Silica Supports for Catalytic Conversion of Levulinic Acid

Balla Putrakumar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid to gamma-valerolactone over copper catalysts supported on different types of mesoporous silica. The Cu/SBA-15 catalyst exhibited excellent performance attributed to its high surface acidity, reducibility of Cu oxides species, and highly dispersed Cu particles. The activity of the catalysts was significantly influenced by the textural properties, surface acidity, and copper dispersion.

Metal Atom-Decorated Carbon Nanomaterials for Enhancing Li-S/Se Batteries Performances: A Mini Review

Xingxing Gu et al.

Summary: Introducing metal atom-decorated carbon nanomaterials has been proven effective in inhibiting the dissolution of polysulfides/polyselenides and catalyzing their quick redox conversions, thereby enhancing the electrochemical performances of Li-S and Li-Se batteries. However, drawbacks and bottlenecks of this kind of material must also be taken into consideration when used in these batteries.
