Improving the hydrothermal stability and hydrogen selectivity of Ni-Cu based catalysts for the aqueous-phase reforming of methanol

Yong Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of ZnO/Ni-xCu/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared to improve the activity and stability of non-precious metal catalysts for hydrogen production. The addition of Cu enhanced the reducibility of NiO and facilitated the formation of smaller and more dispersed metal particles on the surface of Al2O3, resulting in increased hydrogen production and reduced methane formation. The ZnO/Ni-8Cu/Al2O3 catalyst showed the highest hydrogen production rate and selectivity, which were 1.6 times and 20.7% higher than those of the mono-metallic ZnO/Ni/Al2O3 catalyst, respectively. The addition of ZnO also improved the stability of the catalyst during aqueous phase reforming of methanol.

Effective tri-metallic TiO2 supported catalyst for hydrocarbon production from carbon dioxide

J. N. Ullas Krishnan et al.

Summary: This work explores the feasibility of the reaction between carbon dioxide and steam to form hydrocarbons of fuel value. A multi-metallic catalyst supported by TiO2 Nano-needles was used, and the reaction mechanism is expected to proceed with activated CO2 complex and hydroxyl groups over the catalyst. Various characterization techniques were used to analyze the catalyst activity and confirm the products formed, with methanol and oxygen being the main products. However, the conversion rate was found to be low, ranging from 0.4% to 3.8% in the temperature range of 350°C to 550°C. The reaction with hydroxyl groups from water vapor could be an effective alternative to the reaction with protons from hydrogen.

Increasing the Hardness and Corrosion Resistance of the Surface of CP-Ti by Plasma Electrolytic Nitrocarburising and Polishing

Sergei Kusmanov et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the possibility of increasing the hardness to 1420 HV and the corrosion resistance of the CP-Ti surface through a combined plasma electrolytic treatment. The treatment involves anodic plasma electrolytic nitrocarburising in a solution of ammonia, acetone, and ammonium chloride at 900 degrees C, followed by plasma electrolytic polishing. The research focuses on the morphology, surface roughness, phase composition, structure, microhardness, and corrosion characteristics of the modified layer. Results show that an increase in surface roughness negatively affects the corrosion resistance, and plasma electrolytic polishing can effectively remove the outer porous oxide layer for improved corrosion resistance. The best reduction in corrosion current density is achieved after plasma electrolytic polishing in a solution of ammonium fluoride (4%) at 300 V for 3 minutes, with a decrease of 13 times compared to CP-Ti and two orders compared to a plasma electrolytic nitrocarburising sample.

Electrochemical, Biological, and Technological Properties of Anodized Titanium for Color Coded Implants

Josef Hlinka et al.

Summary: Anodization coloring is commonly used for differentiation of titanium tools or implants. Commercial purity titanium grade 4 plates were tested for their properties. The coloring process was done using different potentials in citric acid solution. The anodization process significantly decreases corrosion potential and higher potential results in higher polarization resistance but lower corrosion potential. The anodization process at 75 V produces surfaces with the lowest corrosion rate and noblest corrosion potential, without affecting titanium cytotoxicity.

Zn Modification of Pd/TiO2/Ti Catalyst for CO Oxidation

Payam Samadi et al.

Summary: The activity of Pd/TiO2/Ti catalyst in CO oxidation was improved by adding Zn. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) was used to produce a porous layer of TiO2 on Ti wire. Pd and Zn were introduced through adsorption, and the activity was examined by CO oxidation. Model catalysts were prepared to investigate the reaction between Pd and Zn. Characterization techniques such as SEM-EDS, TOF-SIMS, ICP-MS, FTIR, and XRD were used to analyze the structures and compositions of the samples. Zn modification of the Pd/TiO2/Ti catalyst decreased the temperature of CO oxidation and improved the adsorption of oxygen.

Influence of Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation of Cast Al-Si Alloys on Their Phase Composition and Abrasive Wear Resistance

Mykhailo Student et al.

Summary: The microhardness and abrasive wear resistance of cast Al-Si alloys were tested after plasma-electrolytic oxidation (PEO) in a weakly alkaline basic electrolyte and with the addition of H2O2. Results showed that the PEO layer comprised alpha-Al2O3, gamma-Al2O3, sillimanite -Al2O3 Greek ano teleia SiO2, and a small percentage of mullite -3 Al2O3 Greek ano teleia 2SiO(2). Silicon was present in the structure of the oxide layer, with a higher percentage than in the alloys' initial state. The characteristics of the PEO layers on AK9 and AK12 silumins synthesized in the electrolyte increased, with microhardness up to 900-1000 HV and abrasive wear resistance improved by 14-57 times. The formation of PEO layers in the base electrolyte with the addition of hydrogen peroxide intensified the synthesis process and promoted the formation of high-temperature oxide phases, leading to a 30-70% increase in the abrasive wear resistance of both silumins.
