Understanding the role of unzipped carbon nanotubes in cement pastes

Dong Lu et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) are commonly used carbon-based materials for modifying cementitious materials. This study discovered that unzipped carbon nanotubes (UCNTs) can significantly enhance the compressive and flexural strengths of cement paste, outperforming CNTs and GO. The outstanding reinforcement efficiency of UCNTs is attributed to their abundant surface chemistry similar to GO, as well as their one-dimensionality and bending stiffness similar to pristine CNTs.

Highly conductive and sensitive piezoresistive cement mortar with graphene coated aggregates and carbon fiber

Dong Lu et al.

Summary: Traditionally, conductive fillers are mixed directly with cement matrix before binding with aggregates to develop piezoresistive cement-based sensors. This study proposes a strategy to construct a three-dimensional (3D) conductive network in the mortar with interfacial transition zone (ITZ) directly embedded in it, thus greatly increasing both the conductivity and piezoresistivity without significantly sacrificing mechanical property. Highly conductive graphene-coated fine aggregates (termed conductive G@FAg particles) are prepared and combined with carbon fibers to achieve outstanding electrical conductivity and selfsensing ability.
