Developing an operational definition of housing instability and homelessness in Veterans Health Administration's medical records

Jack Tsai et al.

Summary: The study aims to examine the representation of homelessness and housing instability in the Veterans Health Administration's data sources. It found that different data sources can provide a more comprehensive count of homeless and unstably housed veterans, and regional variability in data capture supports the need for uniform operationalization. The findings highlight the importance of using all available indicators and data sources, and the potential impact on other healthcare systems.

Summary: Despite a decade-long federal commitment to address veteran homelessness, analysis of community surveys and administrative data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in 2020 show that the issue persists, particularly among racial/ethnic minorities. This highlights the continued need to dedicate resources to address veteran homelessness across sociodemographic groups.

Robert Rosenheck et al.

Summary: The study examined the increase in the number of homeless veterans served and changes in the intensity of services provided from 2008 to 2015, showing a significant expansion of services for homeless veterans, especially in supported housing, while successfully maintaining focus on the target population. Although the number of homeless veterans served increased, there was little evidence of reductions in the intensity of services provided.
