Overdiagnosis in lung cancer screening: Estimates from the German Lung Cancer Screening Intervention Trial

Sandra Gonzalez Maldonado et al.

Summary: A study on lung cancer screening among long-term smokers revealed a risk of overdiagnosis in the screening group, especially for individuals with shorter life expectancies. The excess cumulative incidence in the screening arm was largely driven by adenocarcinomas, suggesting a major risk of overdiagnosis for individuals with comparatively short remaining life expectancies.

Addressing harms of screening - A review of outcomes in Cochrane reviews and suggestions for next steps

Minna Johansson et al.

Summary: The study found that Cochrane reviews assessing screening interventions often do not adequately address the major harms associated with these interventions, reflecting a lack of reporting in primary research. Developing reporting guidelines and core outcome sets is essential to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the harms of screening interventions.

Ovarian cancer population screening and mortality after long-term follow-up in the UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS): a randomised controlled trial

Usha Menon et al.

Summary: The long-term follow-up of the UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS) did not show a significant reduction in deaths due to ovarian or tubal cancer with screening. While there was an increase in early-stage cancer detection in the MMS group, it did not translate into lives saved, highlighting the importance of specifying cancer mortality as the primary outcome in screening trials. Consequently, general population screening for ovarian and tubal cancer cannot be recommended.
