Magnetocontrollable droplet mobility on liquid crystal-infused porous surfaces

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: The effect of magnetic field on the wettability and mobility of droplets on structured fluids is not well understood. This study manipulates the behaviors of water droplets on a film of thermotropic liquid crystals and finds that the static wetting behavior and static friction depend on the liquid crystal mesophases, while a magnetic field has no measurable effect on these properties. However, the droplet dynamics can be affected by a magnetic field on a particular liquid crystal film and this is dependent on the direction and strength of the magnetic field. The study also proposes a scaling argument using the magnetic coherence length to interpret the results.

Non-equilibrium ordering of liquid crystalline (LC) films driven by external gradients in surfactant concentration

Soumita Maiti et al.

Summary: This study explores the non-equilibrium interfacial behaviors of thermotropic liquid crystals and finds that the reordering of the liquid crystals is mainly caused by interfacial shearing. Simple methods for mapping interfacial velocities and investigating surfactant-driven flows are established, revealing the importance of surface advection and surfactant desorption. The dynamic states adopted by the liquid crystals in the presence of surfactant concentration gradients offer new opportunities for engineering complex fluids beyond equilibrium.

Perspiring Soft Robotics Skin Constituted by Dynamic Polarity-Switching Porous Liquid Crystal Membrane

Yuanyuan Zhan et al.

Summary: An innovative strategy is reported to dynamically switch the polarity of a porous membrane, enabling the exchange between apolar and polar liquids. By incorporating a benzoic acid derivative into the original apolar polymer network, the polarity of the membrane can be changed through the formation and breaking of hydrogen bonds. This approach allows for the ejection and reabsorption of polar liquids using UV illumination and visible light, or spontaneous absorption in the dark.

Summary: Fish scale-inspired underwater superoleophobic coatings can be achieved by creating hierarchical surface topography on water-compatible materials, but current methods do not allow for independent tuning of underwater superoleophobicity and oil adhesion. This study introduces a novel class of coatings, dually reactive multilayer coatings, which can independently tune these properties through orthogonal functionalization of reactive moieties at ambient conditions, leading to the development of superoleophobic sensors for real-time detection.

Humidity-Responsive Photonic Crystals with pH and SO2 Gas Detection Ability Based on Cholesteric Liquid Crystalline Networks

Chen Shen et al.

Summary: Dynamic photonic crystals with tunable structural colors have been widely studied for applications in anti-counterfeiting devices, decoration, and detection. In this study, photonic crystals based on cholesteric liquid crystalline network (CLCN) were prepared to exhibit humidity- and SO2 gas-responsive behaviors. The humidity-responsive color changes of the CLCN film were due to the swelling/deswelling of the matrix under different humidity conditions. However, treatment with SO2 gas caused the film to lose its humidity responsiveness by converting the carboxylic salt to acid.

Sensing Gas Mixtures by Analyzing the Spatiotemporal Optical Responses of Liquid Crystals Using 3D Convolutional Neural Networks

Nanqi Bao et al.

Summary: In this study, we show how analysis of the optical responses of liquid crystal films to targeted gases using a machine learning methodology can improve gas sensing and provide insights into the underlying physical processes. We demonstrate that a three-dimensional convolutional neural network can extract feature information from the color patterns of the liquid crystals to detect and quantify the presence of different gases in mixtures. Our findings suggest that the detection of O3 is driven by the transition time of brightness changes in the liquid crystals, while the detection of Cl2 is driven by late-developing color fluctuations. This research has implications for the design of portable liquid crystal monitoring devices.
