Scenario analysis of high and steep cutting slopes protection in the loess hilly region: A case study of the Yangjuangou catchment in Yan?an, China

Zhi Cao et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a technical procedure to explore the optimal combination scheme of slope-cutting and vegetation-planting in future climate change in the loess plateau of China, focusing on gully land consolidation. The procedure includes scenarios design, model calculation, and scheme optimization. The findings suggest that a slope of 53 degrees with Caragana microphylla could be the optimal combination scheme considering flat land creating and the safety of slopes. The results can support gully land consolidation in related areas and serve as a reference for other construction projects.

Thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of geothermal energy tunnel in different ground conditions

Jinquan Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a numerical model was developed to simulate the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior and investigate the mechanical responses of energy tunnel and surrounding soils. The study found that the thermally induced ground settlement is more critical than the lining deformation.

Volumetric behaviour of clays under freeze-thaw cycles in a mesoscopically uniform element

Satoshi Nishimura et al.

Summary: The study investigates the volume change behavior of fine-grained soils under repeated freeze-thaw cycles. It found that soils reach residual states unique to each stress level after freeze-thaw cycles, and the freeze-thaw residual line (FTRL) represents these states. The distance of the current soil state to the FTRL, defined as the freeze-thaw state parameter, correlates well with subsequent volume changes.

Stability behavior of a reservoir soil bank slope under freeze-thaw cycles in cold regions

Zipeng Qin et al.

Summary: By studying the instability of irrigation reservoir bank slopes in cold regions caused by freeze-thaw cycles, a numerical model was established to predict the slope failure based on temperature, cracks generation, and safety factors with hydrothermal variation. The results show a 10.43% decrease in safety factor after 5 freeze-thaw cycles, indicating an accelerated slope instability.

Soil Response during Globally Drained and Undrained Freeze-Thaw Cycles under Deviatoric Loading

Sang Yeob Kim et al.

Summary: Sediments undergo shear and volumetric strains during freeze-thaw cycles, with the response being influenced by sediment type and drainage conditions. Factors such as ice pore habit, freezing rate relative to pressure diffusion rate, play key roles in sediment response.
