What Builds Resilience? Sociodemographic and Social Correlates in the Population-Based LIFE-Adult-Study

Elena Caroline Weitzel et al.

Summary: Resilience is closely related to mental health and well-being. Identifying risk groups and variables associated with lower resilience can inform preventive approaches. Social variables seem to be particularly important for resilience, and higher resilience is associated with female gender, married marital status, high education, and full-time occupation. In times of crisis, public health policies should pay special attention to risk groups with lower resilience and focus on reducing loneliness and promoting social connectedness to build resilience in the general population.

Individual values and spirituality and their meaning for affective well-being and engagement with life in very old age

Marcella Reissmann et al.

Summary: This study examined individual values and spirituality in very old people and found that growth-oriented values had a positive association with quality of life outcomes, while protective values were not beneficial. Very old people valued spirituality, mainly focusing on environmental, interpersonal, and transcendental connectedness, which were positively connected to quality of life outcomes.

Impact of Social Network Size and Contact Frequency on Resilience in Community-Dwelling Healthy Older Adults Living Alone in the Republic of Korea

Sangmi Park et al.

The resilience paradox

George A. Bonanno

Summary: Decades of research have shown that predicting who will have resilience following potential trauma is difficult due to the modest correlates of resilient outcomes. Commonly used resilience questionnaires and multivariate modeling fail to accurately identify predictors of resilience, with small effects being attributed to situational variability and cost-benefit tradeoffs in behavioral responses.
