Success and challenges in predicting TBM penetration rate using recurrent neural networks

Feng Shan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on using recurrent neural networks to predict the penetration rate of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The one-step forecast is accurate regardless of different geological conditions, but predicting multiple steps ahead proves to be more challenging. The recursive neural network approach did not effectively address the lag problems. Among the alternative methods studied, the average N-step forecast with short inputs provides the best results. The accuracy of the forecast also depends on the correlation between the last measured step and the predicted steps in the data.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of different degrees of discontinuity development on generalized RQD characteristics. It concludes that generalized RQD should be introduced to fully reflect rock mass anisotropy, with the optimal threshold determined by an anisotropic coefficient. Additionally, it is noted that fracture spacing significantly influences RQD anisotropy and the selection of the optimal threshold, with the optimal threshold increasing with larger fracture spacings.
