Compressibility behaviour on carbonation of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) treated kaolin

Azimah Ayub et al.

Summary: The increasing concerns about environmental contamination have raised the need for a better understanding of carbon dioxide emissions. The impact of economic activities and global population growth has negatively affected the environment. This study focuses on reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the construction industry through the use of sustainable materials. The research shows that the compressibility behavior of kaolin clay treated with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) improves with higher GGBS content and longer curing time. It also reveals that carbonation enhances the compressibility features of kaolin clay.

Physicochemical and Microstructural Evaluation in Lime-Treated Silty Soil Exposed to Successive Wetting-Drying Cycles Submitted to Different Testing Conditions

Geetanjali Das et al.

Summary: The physicochemical and microstructural changes in lime-treated soil under successive wetting and drying cycles were investigated. The laboratory testing conditions were discussed in relation to in situ conditions. The results showed that drying the lime-treated soil at 71 degrees C significantly increased the soil's unconfined compressive strength and suction, while reducing its available cementitious bonding.

Carbonation behavior of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H): Its potential for CO2 capture

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the carbonation kinetics of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) with varying calcium to silica ratio (Ca/Si) were investigated. The results showed three distinct periods in the carbonation process and quantitatively characterized the evolution of carbonation products. The findings not only enhance our understanding of the deterioration of cementitious materials under carbonation, but also provide new insights into CO2 capture using C-S-H.

Influence of soil microstructure on air permeability in compacted clay

Viet Nguyen et al.

Summary: This paper describes an experimental study on the influence of soil microstructure on air permeability in compacted clay. Results show that air permeability is significantly affected by the as-compacted degree of saturation and dry density. The study also proposes a new method for estimating air permeability based on pore size parameters obtained from microstructural analysis.

Influence of recycled concrete aggregate on the foam stability of aerated geopolymer concrete

Kirubajiny Pasupathy et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) on aerated geopolymer concrete (GFC), revealing that the use of RCA significantly improves foam stability, reduces settlement, and increases initial yield stress. The setting time of geopolymer decreases with increasing RCA content, but foam instability and settlement are stabilized well before the initial setting time.

Strength development and lime consumption progress relationship in lime stabilized bentonite samples

Fatima Gueridi et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that short-term and long-term reactions take place sequentially. The short-term reaction occurs at constant pH, lasting about 3 days and resulting in limited strength gain. The long-term pozzolanic reaction develops much of the strength gain in line with lime consumption.

Evaluating the Durability of Lime-Stabilized Soil Mixtures using Soil Mineralogy and Computational Geochemistry

Pavan Akula et al.

Summary: Lime stabilization is a common technique used to improve clayey soils, involving mechanisms such as durable pozzolanic reactions and reversible consistency changes due to calcium adsorption. This study focused on expansive clays with a plasticity index of 0.45%, evaluating the formation of different forms of C-S-H through mineralogical analyses and geochemical modeling. Results showed that maintaining a pH >= 10 is crucial for the stability of C-S-H, with C-S-H with a Ca/Si ratio of 0.66 being the most stable form.

Compressive strength and microstructure evolution of lime-treated silty soil subjected to kneading action

Geetanjali Das et al.

Summary: The long-term improvement in soil behavior after lime treatment is influenced by the mechanism of implementation, with kneading action leading to better lime dispersion and enhanced pozzolanic reactions. Compacting lime-treated soil with kneading at Wet Moisture Content (WMC) higher than Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) benefits the evolution of Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) in specimens subjected to longer and accelerated curing. The UCS evolution in laboratory accelerated-cured kneaded soil is comparable to the average UCS measured in in-situ 7 years atmospherically cured kneaded soil.

Effects of carbonation on chemo-mechanical behaviour of lime-treated soils

E. Vitale et al.

Summary: This study presents a multi-scale experimental investigation on the carbonation process and its impact on the chemo-mechanical behavior of lime-treated soil. The research reveals that the carbonation process affects the chemo-mineralogical evolution of lime-treated soils, depending on the time scale at which the reaction mechanism takes place. In the short term, carbonation of portlandite leads to the formation of calcium carbonate, while in the long term, carbonation of secondary phases weakens the bonding effects induced by hydrated compounds.
