Do environmental attitudes affect public acceptance of key enabling technologies? Assessing the influence of environmental awareness and trust on public perceptions about nanotechnology

Niccolo Maria Todaro et al.

Summary: Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) are crucial for cleaner production, sustainable development, and well-being in modern societies. To successfully implement these technologies, public acceptance is necessary. This study focuses on the influence of environmental attitudes and awareness on public perceptions of the benefits and risks of nanotechnology. Results show that environmental awareness positively affects perceptions, and trust in different actors moderates these perceptions. The study highlights the importance of public trust in shaping perceptions of novel technologies and provides implications for information strategies to promote acceptance of KETs among the public.
