Long-term evaluation of a low-cost air sensor network for monitoring indoor and outdoor air quality at the community scale

Rachel E. Connolly et al.

Summary: This study deployed 30 PurpleAir II sensors (12 outdoor and 18 indoor) in partnership with community members living near a major interstate freeway for air quality monitoring. The results showed that indoor sensors performed more reliably and had higher data completeness compared to outdoor sensors. All outdoor sensors exhibited high temporal correlation and spatial homogeneity.

Assessing the contributions of outdoor and indoor sources to air quality in London homes of the SCAMP cohort

Tuan V. Vu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fate and impact of outdoor and indoor pollutants in London homes on human exposure. The results show that the concentrations of pollutants are higher in the kitchen environment, with cooking times being the peak pollution moments. Indoor sources are the main contributors to the increase in indoor pollutant concentrations, while outdoor and indoor air exchange plays an important role in reducing indoor air pollution.

Comparative Study on the Use of Some Low-Cost Optical Particulate Sensors for Rapid Assessment of Local Air Quality Changes

Laszlo Bencs et al.

Summary: This study tested two types of low-cost sensors in Budapest, Hungary and found that they showed acceptable accuracy in measuring particulate matter in indoor and outdoor air. However, there were biases among the sensors, and lower concentrations of particles were more susceptible to bias. The sensors also needed field calibration to accurately measure particles under high humidity conditions. The air quality index was used to classify air pollution levels and predict health effects. The sensors were useful in detecting peaks in air pollution caused by motor vehicle emissions and cooking/heating activities.

Evaluating the PurpleAir monitor as an aerosol light scattering instrument

James R. Ouimette et al.

Summary: The study shows that the PMS sensor is equivalent to a cell-reciprocal nephelometer and can be used to measure the light scattering coefficient of aerosols linearly related to the volume scattering function. Through a physical-optical model, it was found that the PMS's response to particles > 0.3 µm decreases by about 75%, indicating that the PMS is not an optical particle counter.

Summary: The study utilized small Home Health Boxes (HHBs) to measure indoor air pollution, finding that gas cooking burners were the main source of CO and NO2, but HHB and reference O-3 data were not correlated. Interpreting HHB gas sensor data using calibration models decreased root-mean-square error and improved correlation between HHB and reference O-3 data.

Summary: This study introduces a methodology using machine learning to improve the accuracy of low-cost optical particle counters (OPCs) in measuring indoor particles. A two-month field measurement campaign conducted in a net-zero energy house showed that the machine learning field calibration method significantly improved the accuracy of size-integrated volume concentrations reported by the OPCs.

Summary: This study assessed the performance of a newly developed low-cost optical PM sensor and developed post-hoc data calibration methods to optimize data quality. Strong correlations and relatively small standard deviations were found between sensors in laboratory and field sampling. After calibration, the ratios of sensor measurements over that of reference methods converged.

Assessing the value of complex refractive index and particle density for calibration of low-cost particle matter sensor for size-resolved particle count and PM2.5 measurements

Ching-Hsuan Huang et al.

Summary: Low-cost optical scattering particulate matter (PM) sensors report total or size-specific particle counts and mass concentrations, with estimation by OEM proprietary algorithms. Improved calibration algorithms for the Plantower PMS A003 sensor were developed for enhanced accuracy, taking into account aerosol properties and environmental conditions to reduce errors in mass concentration estimates by the OEM. The calibration models can be used in various monitoring scenarios where field calibration may pose challenges.

Summary: During the COVID-19 lockdown, indoor PM2.5 concentrations increased significantly, particularly with clear peaks in residential areas in the afternoon and evening, reflecting increased human activity and household chores during meal times. The contribution of indoor-generated PM2.5 to total indoor concentrations increased as high as 80% during and post-lockdown periods compared to before lockdown.

Temporal and spatial variation of PM2.5 in indoor air monitored by low-cost sensors

Huizhong Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated spatiotemporal variations and source contributions of indoor PM2.5 in a typical apartment in Beijing using low-cost sensors. It was found that indoor particulate matter predominantly originates from outdoor infiltration and cooking emissions, with the latter contributing more fine particles. Indoor PM2.5 concentrations were correlated with ambient levels but generally lower, with the predominant indoor source being cooking.
