Lean mass sparing in resistance-trained athletes during caloric restriction: the role of resistance training volume

C. Roth et al.

Summary: This review investigates whether increasing resistance training volume during caloric restriction (CR) can help spare lean mass. The results show that higher resistance training volume (>= 10 weekly sets per muscle group) can reduce lean mass loss in female athletes, and increasing resistance training volume during CR appears to be more effective in reducing lean mass loss compared to reducing training volume. However, due to incomplete data on resistance training variables in the included studies, the current evidence is insufficient to conclude whether higher resistance training volume is better for sparing lean mass during CR.

Energy deficiency impairs resistance training gains in lean mass but not strength: A meta-analysis and meta-regression

Chaise Murphy et al.

Summary: Short-term energy deficits have negative effects on anabolic hormones and muscle protein synthesis, while prolonged energy deficits can impair muscle mass gains. It is recommended that individuals aiming to increase muscle mass through resistance training avoid prolonged energy deficits, and those looking to preserve muscle mass during weight loss should keep energy deficits below 500 kcal/day.

Summary: Low GI/GL diets are not superior to high GI/GL diets in adults with excess weight, but they may be more effective in reducing fasting glucose and insulin levels and promoting greater weight loss in adults with obesity (BMI >= 30 kg m(-2)).

Dietary protein and the glycemic index handle insulin resistance within a nutritional program for avoiding weight regain after energy-restricted induced weight loss

Fernando Vidal-Ostos et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of dietary protein and glycemic index on insulin resistance in the context of weight loss and maintenance. The results suggest that a high protein, low glycemic index diet not only helps with weight maintenance, but also improves insulin resistance.
