Baseline characteristics of people experiencing homelessness with a recent drug overdose in the PHOENIx pilot randomised controlled trial

Richard Lowrie et al.

Summary: Drug-related deaths in Scotland are the highest in Europe, and half of these deaths occur in people experiencing homelessness. However, there is limited knowledge about the unmet health needs of this population with recent non-fatal overdoses, which hinders the development of tailored interventions and policies to address this public health crisis.

Outreach-based clinical pharmacist prescribing input into the healthcare of people experiencing homelessness: a qualitative investigation

Sarah Johnsen et al.

Summary: The study found that a mobile service delivered by prescribing pharmacists in collaboration with a local voluntary sector provider within homelessness services and on the street was effective at engaging reluctant patients, overcoming barriers to healthcare access for the homeless, and improving health outcomes. This proactive, person-centered outreach service offers substantial potential for bridging the gap in healthcare provision for vulnerable populations experiencing homelessness.

Treatment Burden in People with Hypertension is Correlated with Patient Experience with Self-Management

Elizabeth A. Rogers et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between treatment burden and self-management factors in patients with hypertension. The results showed that individuals with hypertension who had lower confidence in self-management ability, lower health literacy, more financial difficulties, and health care providers with poorer interpersonal skills reported higher treatment burden scores. The findings suggest that stringent hypertension treatment guidelines may place additional strains on patients already struggling with disease self-management.

S. A. McDonald et al.

Summary: The drug-related mortality rates among people who inject drugs in Scotland have increased over the past decade, with factors other than an aging cohort playing a role. Harm reduction services will need to expand and adapt to reverse the recent upward trends in drug-related mortality in this population.
