Body dysmorphia in common skin diseases: results of an observational, cross-sectional multicentre study among dermatological outpatients in 17 European countries

Christina Schut et al.

Summary: This study found that BDD symptoms were fivefold more prevalent in dermatological patients than in healthy skin controls, and were associated with young age, female sex, psychological stress, and feelings of stigmatization. Certain patient groups had a significantly higher chance of BDD symptoms compared with controls. Doctors should consider BDD more often in patients with dermatological conditions and refer them when necessary for assessment and treatment.

Isotretinoin and adverse neuropsychiatric outcomes: retrospective cohort study using routine data

Tapio Paljarvi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the association between isotretinoin use and neuropsychiatric adverse outcomes in acne patients within one year. The results showed that isotretinoin was not independently associated with excess adverse neuropsychiatric outcomes at the population level. When monitoring potential adverse outcomes during isotretinoin treatment, clinicians should consider the high mental health burden associated with treatment-resistant acne and the potential contribution of physical side-effects of prescribed medication on mental health.

Identifying mental health needs of children and youth with skin disease: A systematic review of screening and assessment tools

Emily A. Russell et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify and evaluate patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) used to screen and assess mental health symptoms in youth with skin disease. A systematic literature search revealed 111 PROMs used in this population. While there are generic mental health scales available, only one PROM has been specifically validated in youth with skin disease, and it showed poor quality of evidence.

Predictors of contact with services for mental health problems among children with comorbid long-term physical health conditions: a follow-up study

Laura Panagi et al.

Summary: Children with long-term physical health conditions are at higher risk of developing mental health comorbidities, but most do not seek mental health services. This study found that child, family, and service-related factors play an important role in accessing mental health care for these children, highlighting the need for tailored planning and provision of services to address their mental health needs.

Determination of Markers of Successful Implementation of Mental Health Apps for Young People: Systematic Review

Holly Alice Bear et al.

Summary: This review examines the implementation of evidence-based mental health apps in real-world settings and explores the impact of key implementation determinants on successful implementation and sustainability. The study found that only a few apps have been successfully implemented, and factors such as high cost, funding constraints, and lengthy research processes have hindered implementation. The authors suggest embedding implementation strategies from the outset of research, collaborating with existing partners, and adapting interventions and platforms for local contexts or target populations.

Utilization and Acceptability of Formal and Informal Support for Adolescents Following Self-Harm Before and During the First COVID-19 Lockdown: Results From a Large-Scale English Schools Survey

Galit Geulayov et al.

Summary: This study examined the utilization and acceptability of different types of support accessed by secondary school students in the south of England following self-harm. The results showed that over a third of students did not seek any help after self-harm, and most of those who did not seek help did not find it to be a helpful coping strategy. Further research is needed to explore ways to overcome barriers to help-seeking among adolescents who self-harm and improve the perceived helpfulness of the supports accessed.

Eczema and related atopic diseases are associated with increased symptom severity in children with autism spectrum disorder

C. Jameson et al.

Summary: Growing evidence suggests that genetic, neurological, and environmental factors contribute to the development of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Interestingly, children with ASD often have skin disorders, possibly due to the shared embryonic origin of skin and neural tissue. This study found that atopic disorders, especially comorbid eczema, are associated with increased ASD symptom severity in children.

mTOR-related synaptic pathology causes autism spectrum disorder-associated functional hyperconnectivity

Marco Pagani et al.

Summary: Research indicates that synaptic pathology in Tsc2 haploinsufficient mice is associated with autism-like behavior and hyperconnectivity, which is also found in children with idiopathic ASD. These findings link mTOR-related synaptic pathology to large-scale network aberrations in autism, providing a new perspective on the mechanistic understanding of the disorder.
