Childhood head trauma and the risk of childhood brain tumours: A case-control study in Ontario, Canada

Sierra Cheng et al.

Summary: This study did not find a significant association between childhood brain tumors and previous history of head trauma, severity of head trauma, number of head injuries, or head/neck X-rays/CT examinations. Head trauma within the first year of life was significantly associated with brain tumors, but the association weakened when adjusted for X-rays or CT during the same time period.

Epidemiology of Brain and Other CNS Tumors

Quinn T. Ostrom et al.

Summary: Brain and other CNS tumors, although rare, have significant morbidity and mortality across all ages. Risk factors for these tumors include high birth weight, non-chromosomal structural birth defects, and higher socioeconomic position for children, while factors such as leukocyte telomere length, European ancestry, socioeconomic position, and HLA haplotypes are associated with increased risk in adults. Although no single risk factor explains a large proportion of these tumors, advancements in omics approaches and detection of environmental exposures may help uncover novel risk factors for this disease.

Anti-seizure medication is not associated with an increased risk to develop cancer in epilepsy patients

Jenny Stritzelberger et al.

Summary: The debate over whether anti-seizure medication increases the risk for cancer has been ongoing for decades. However, a study using anonymous patient data collected by neurologists in Germany from 2009 to 2018 suggests that there is no increase in cancer risk for epilepsy patients using anti-seizure medication.

A pediatric brain tumor atlas of genes deregulated by somatic genomic rearrangement

Yiqun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed cancer genome and RNA sequencing data of 854 pediatric brain tumors, revealing a landscape of genes deregulated by somatic structural variants (SSVs) and identifying distinct SSV-gene associations in progressive or recurrent tumors.

Maternal Medication Use and Childhood Cancer in Offspring-Systematic Review and Considerations for Researchers

Sarah Hjorth et al.

Summary: The research on the association between maternal medication use and childhood cancer shows significant heterogeneity, lacking uniform cancer classification systems, exposure windows, and methods for controlling potential confounders. Future studies need to emphasize consistency and transparency in methodology to enhance comparability.

Paracetamol use during pregnancy - a call for precautionary action

Ann Z. Bauer et al.

Summary: Paracetamol (APAP) is a commonly used medication for mild to moderate pain and reducing fever, but research suggests prenatal exposure may increase the risk of fetal development disorders. Recommendations include cautioning pregnant women to minimize use and consult medical professionals.

Effects of early-life penicillin exposure on the gut microbiome and frontal cortex and amygdala gene expression

Angelina Volkova et al.

Summary: The study established experimental systems to evaluate the impact of early-life exposure to antibiotics on the intestinal microbiota and gene expression in the brain. It found substantial changes in both microbiota population structure and composition, as well as transcriptomic alterations indicating pathways perturbed in neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. Additionally, there were significant effects on gene expression in the frontal cortex and amygdala, with linkages identified between specific intestinal microbial populations and early-life expression of affected genes.
