Contextual considerations in infant sleep: Offering alternative interventions to families

Levita D'Souza et al.

Summary: Infant sleep problems vary in different cultural and personal contexts, and current research models focusing on parent-child interactions may not be applicable to co-sleeping families. This paper proposes an alternative approach to conceptualize and address perceptions of infant sleep problems that are sensitive to various cultural backgrounds.

Association Between Infant Sleep Location and Breastfeeding

Bahar Kural et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that bedsharing can increase the duration of breastfeeding, especially in the first 6 months. However, bedsharing also comes with potential risks, and families should be educated on safe sleep practices and the avoidable risks and unsafe situations associated with bedsharing.

Reasons mothers bedshare: A review of its effects on infant behavior and development

Elaine S. Barry et al.

Summary: Bedsharing is controversial in nighttime caregiving in the U.S. and the West, but it is considered beneficial from the perspective of evolutionary pediatrics, anthropology, and cultural psychology. Mothers choose to bedshare for reasons such as breastfeeding, comforting, better sleep, monitoring, bonding/attachment, among others.

Effect of the INSIGHT Firstborn Parenting Intervention on Secondborn Sleep

Emily E. Hohman et al.

Summary: The INSIGHT RP intervention for first-time mothers had positive effects on sleep duration and behaviors in secondborns, resulting in longer sleep duration and improved sleep behaviors. Secondborns in the RP group were more likely to self-soothe to sleep and less likely to be fed back to sleep after waking compared to secondborns of control mothers. Additionally, secondborns slept 37 minutes longer than firstborns.

Sleep-Related Infant Deaths: Updated 2022 Recommendations for Reducing Infant Deaths in the Sleep Environment

Rachel Y. Moon et al.

Summary: Each year, around 3500 infants die of sleep-related infant deaths in the United States. The overall death rate has remained stagnant since 2000, and disparities persist. The triple risk model suggests that SIDS occurs when an infant with intrinsic vulnerability experiences an exogenous trigger event during a critical developmental period. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends safe sleep environments and other measures to reduce the risk of sleep-related deaths.

Digital health tools to support parents with parent-infant sleep and mental well-being

Helen L. Ball et al.

Summary: Digital technology plays an increasingly important role in the lives of new parents, offering them access to information and solutions for improving infant sleep and parental well-being. However, there are varied opinions on the effectiveness of digital technology in these areas, as well as concerns about information reliability, personal data use, commercial exploitation, and its impact on caregiver presence.

Infant feeding practices and sleep at 1 year of age in the nationwide ELFE cohort

Sabine Messayke et al.

Summary: This study found that longer duration of breastfeeding (>= 6 months) was associated with sleep problems at age 1, including frequent night waking, sleep onset difficulties, and shorter total sleep duration. Early introduction of baby cereals and thickened formula may lead to poor sleep quality. Introduction of complementary feeding at an early age (<4 months) was related to shorter total sleep duration and sleep onset difficulties at age 1, but not night waking.

Possums-based parental education for infant sleep: cued care resulting in sustained breastfeeding

Merve Ozturk et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of the Possums Infant Sleep Program on infant sleep and breastfeeding in Turkey. While there were significant improvements in nocturnal wakefulness and sleep duration in the intervention group compared to usual care, there were no significant differences in other sleep parameters. However, breastfeeding rates were significantly higher in the intervention group, indicating the program's positive impact on sustained breastfeeding.

Commentary: Does 'cry it out' really have no adverse effects on attachment? Reflections on Bilgin and Wolke (2020)

Abi M. B. Davis et al.

Summary: The study argues that leaving an infant to cry it out does not have adverse effects on mother-infant attachment at 18 months, but this is contrary to evidence from various scientific fields. Concerns were raised about statistical power and analytical decisions in the study, as well as the authors possibly exaggerating their findings and the potential impact on public parenting behaviors.
