The continuing conundrum in oligometastatic breast carcinoma: A real-world data

Gangothri Selvarajan et al.

Summary: The optimal management of oligometastatic breast carcinoma is still undefined. This study aimed to identify prognostic factors and the effect of Locoregional treatment (LRT) on survival in oligometastatic breast carcinoma. The results showed that survival was influenced by oligometastatic disease, Ki67 < 50%, premenopausal status, and hormone therapy. The study highlights the importance of curative LRT to metastatic sites and primary tumor in improving the long-term survival of patients with oligometastatic breast carcinoma.

Oligometastasis in breast cancer-current status and treatment options from a radiation oncology perspective

Marc D. Piroth et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that SBRT treatment in oligometastatic breast cancer shows positive effects on local tumor control and survival rates, but it remains unclear which patients benefit the most from this approach. Further studies are needed to prove the benefits of SBRT in oligometastatic breast cancer and to define appropriate selection criteria.

The oligometastatic spectrum in the era of improved detection and modern systemic therapy

Rohan R. Katipally et al.

Summary: This review reframes the oligometastatic phenotype as a dynamic state that can be improved with locally ablative, metastasis-directed therapy. The authors highlight important risk factors defining the metastatic spectrum and provide strategies for integrating local therapies with modern systemic treatments.

Diagnosis, biology and epidemiology of oligometastatic breast cancer

Jean-Louis Lacaze et al.

Summary: Oligometastatic breast cancer (OMBC) lacks a standardized treatment strategy, with limited information provided by existing literature. Research on OMBC biological characteristics suggests a focus on circulating tumor cell counts, as well as development of studies on microRNAs, circulating tumor DNA, and genomic alterations.

Long-term outcomes of oligometastatic breast cancer patients treated with curative intent: an updated report

Eijiro Nagasaki et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed oligometastatic breast cancer (OMBC) patients and found that after excluding isolated locoregional recurrence cases, the overall survival rates at 20 and 25 years were 28.3% and 18.9% respectively, with a relapse-free rate of 26.7%. In multivariate analysis, single-organ involvement and three or fewer metastatic lesions per organ were associated with a longer progression-free interval and relapse-free interval.

Characterization of Oligometastatic Disease in a Real-World Nationwide Cohort of 3447 Patients With de Novo Metastatic Breast Cancer

Tessa G. Steenbruggen et al.

Summary: Studies show that OMBC defined as MBC limited to 1-3 metastases is associated with favorable OS. In OMBC, local therapy of metastases was associated with better OS, particularly if patients were premenopausal or perimenopausal without lung metastases.

Characterization of Oligometastatic Disease in a Real-World Nationwide Cohort of 3447 Patients With de Novo Metastatic Breast Cancer

Tessa G. Steenbruggen et al.

Summary: In this study, oligo-metastatic breast cancer (OMBC) was defined as having 1-3 metastases, with more metastases being associated with poorer overall survival. Premenopausal and perimenopausal status, absence of lung metastases, and local therapy (surgery and/or radiotherapy) in addition to systemic therapy were significantly associated with better overall survival and progression-free survival in OMBC patients.
