Description and phylogenetic relationships of a new, purple-flowered, endangered Schomburgkia (Laeliinae; Orchidaceae) from north-eastern Brazil

Edlley M. Pessoa et al.

Summary: This article describes a new species, S. vandenbergiana, from Brazil and provides a phylogenetic analysis and conservation status summary. The study suggests that S. vandenbergiana is closely related to S. undulata and S. gloriosa, but the trait of dark purple flowers seems to have multiple origins. Morphologically, the new species is more similar to S. heidii from Colombia and Venezuela, but with some differences in certain features. Based on IUCN criteria, the new species should be classified as endangered.
