Introducing an Ethics Framework for health priority-setting in South Africa on the path to universal health coverage

D. Blaauw et al.

Summary: South Africa is implementing universal health coverage funded by National Health Insurance. In order to incorporate ethical considerations in decision-making, the SAVE-UHC research project developed and tested an Ethics Framework for health technology assessment (HTA). The Framework was well-received and is expected to be a valuable tool in priority-setting processes.

Stunting in infancy, pubertal trajectories and adult body composition: the Birth to Twenty Plus cohort, South Africa

Glory Chidumwa et al.

Summary: This study found that being stunted in childhood is directly related to slower pubertal development and shorter adult stature, but does not affect adolescent BMI trajectories, adult fat mass, or fat-free mass. However, stunting indirectly influences adult fat mass and fat-free mass through slower pubertal development and shorter adult height.

Double-duty solutions for optimising maternal and child nutrition in urban South Africa: a qualitative study

Agnes Erzse et al.

Summary: The study found that in Soweto, South Africa, despite the importance placed on healthy eating, it was easier to access cheap unhealthy food. Factors such as land use, hygiene, and low income played a fundamental role in shaping access to foods and decisions about what to eat. Participants suggested changes in health sector, social protection, food system, and food environment to address the issue.

The association between fetal growth and neonatal adiposity in urban South African infants

Stephanie V. Wrottesley et al.

Summary: This study examined the associations between maternal BMI, gestational weight gain, fetal growth, and neonatal adiposity in urban South Africans. In conclusion, in utero abdominal growth is predictive of neonatal adiposity, with greater fetal growth, particularly of the abdominal circumference, mediating the effect of GWG on neonatal adiposity. Strategies promoting healthy pregnancy weight gain can help prevent intergenerational obesity risk in settings like South Africa.
