Prevalence and associated factors of hypertension among South African adults: findings from the Demographic and Health Survey 2016

Rajat Das Gupta et al.

Summary: The prevalence and associated factors of hypertension in South Africa were analyzed using the data from the 2016 South Africa Demographic and Health Survey. The study found that according to the 2017 ACC/AHA and JNC7 guidelines, the prevalence of hypertension in South Africa was 75.0% and 50.4% respectively. The Association of Socioeconomic Status With Hypertension in 76 Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Tabea K. Kirschbaum et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study aimed to understand the impact of education and household wealth on hypertension prevalence in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as the association between these socioeconomic gradients and a country's gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. The study found that the influence of education and household wealth on hypertension prevalence varied across countries and regions, and as LMICs develop economically, hypertension may increasingly affect adults in the lowest socioeconomic groups.

Green Space and Health Equity: A Systematic Review on the Potential of Green Space to Reduce Health Disparities

Alessandro Rigolon et al.

Summary: Green spaces have stronger protective effects on disadvantaged groups, particularly in public green spaces/parks, with studies in Europe showing more significant effects than those in North America, and no notable differences in the protective effects among different racial/ethnic groups. These results suggest green space may be a tool to promote health equity.

Prevalence of Hypertension and Its Associated Risk Factors in a Rural Black Population of Mthatha Town, South Africa

Jyoti Rajan Sharma et al.

Summary: The study revealed a high prevalence of hypertension among the black rural African population in Mthatha town, South Africa, with age, BMI, diabetic status, and westernized diet being significant predictors. Individuals who did not recognize the importance of medication had a higher chance of having untreated hypertension. Gender, age, westernized diet, education level, income status, diabetic status, and overweight/obese status were identified as the most significant predictors of hypertension.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in blood pressure in LMICs, with low awareness and control rates, posing challenges to patients and health systems. In addition to traditional risk factors, emerging risk factors also require attention and research. Global actions and promising research efforts demonstrate the feasibility of successful interventions in LMICs.

Hypertension care cascade in the Ingwavuma rural community, uMkhanyakude District, KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa

Herbert Chikafu et al.

Summary: This study in rural South Africa evaluated the performance of the hypertension care cascade (HCC) and identified predictors of hypertension screening among adults. It found that while a high percentage of participants reported prior screening for hypertension, only around half of those under pharmacological treatment had controlled blood pressure. Employment status and cohabiting union were identified as factors influencing likelihood of hypertension screening. Improvements in community-wide interventions, health worker empowerment, and focusing on social determinants of health are suggested to enhance HCC performance.
