Two-year retention in care for adolescents on antiretroviral therapy in Ehlanzeni district, South Africa: a baseline cohort analysis

Emeka F. Okonji et al.

Summary: Adolescents living with HIV face various challenges in remaining engaged in HIV-related care and adhering to antiretroviral treatment. A retrospective cohort analysis of ALHIV aged 10-19 years revealed lower retention in care among females, pregnant adolescents, and those who started ART between the ages of 10 and 19. The retention rate among adolescents on ART over a two-year period was below the UNAIDS target.

Interventions to Improve Treatment Outcomes among Adolescents on Antiretroviral Therapy with Unsuppressed Viral Loads: A Systematic Review

Farai Kevin Munyayi et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of interventions for improving treatment outcomes among adolescents living with HIV who have unsuppressed viral loads. Four potential interventions were identified, including peer-led community-based service delivery, intensive adherence counselling, and family-based economic empowerment. The findings strongly recommend these interventions to improve viral suppression in adolescents living with HIV.

Closing the HIV Treatment Gap for Adolescents in Windhoek, Namibia: A Retrospective Analysis of Predictors of Viral Non-Suppression

Farai Kevin Munyayi et al.

Summary: Windhoek joined the Fast-Track Cities Initiative in 2017 to optimize HIV service delivery for adolescents. However, there is still a significant treatment gap for children and adolescents living with HIV. In a retrospective cohort analysis, it was found that longer duration on ART and being on a third line regimen were protective factors against viral non-suppression. Interventions are required to address treatment fatigue and ensure timely switching to rescue regimens for failing adolescents.

Survival time and predictors of death among HIV infected under five children after initiation of anti -retroviral therapy in West Amhara Referral Hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia

Gebrie Getu Alemu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the survival time and predictors of death among HIV-infected under-five children after initiation of antiretroviral therapy in West Amhara Referral Hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia. The results showed a high death rate among these children within the first year after enrollment. Children living in rural areas, with poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy, without isoniazid prophylaxis, and with anemia were found to be at higher risk of death.
