Variation among 91 stone oak species (Fagaceae, Lithocarpus) in fruit and vegetative morphology in relation to climatic factors

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: This study examined the reproductive and vegetative traits of stone oak species and their correlation with climatic factors. The results showed that different fruit types exhibited different correlations with temperature and wetness. Reproductive components of acorn fruits were positively related to both temperature and wetness, while only the husk volume of enclosed receptacle fruits increased with temperature. In terms of vegetative traits, leaf length and tree height of enclosed receptacle species were negatively related to excessive wetness. These findings highlight the importance of climate in the diversification of stone oaks in tropical and subtropical forests.
