Concurrent wasting and stunting among under-five children in the context of Ethiopia: A generalised mixed-effects modelling

Biniyam Sahiledengle et al.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence of concurrent wasting and stunting (WaSt) in Ethiopia and identified potential associated factors. The prevalence of WaSt was found to be 4.7%, with 2.5% in urban settings and 4.9% in rural settings. Children aged 12-59 months, perceived as smaller than normal at birth by their mothers, and those with diarrhea and recent history of fever had higher odds of WaSt.

Determinants of undernutrition among young children in Ethiopia

Biniyam Sahiledengle et al.

Summary: Ethiopia has a high burden of childhood undernutrition, and factors such as male sex, older age groups, and lower wealth quintile contribute to this problem. Strengthening specific and sensitive interventions, particularly targeting low-income households with male children, is crucial in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of overweight/obesity and associated factors among under-five children in Ethiopia using data from the 2019 Ethiopia Mini Demographic and Health Survey. The overall prevalence of overweight/obesity was low among under-five children in Ethiopia. Factors such as child age, maternal age, mode of delivery, sex of head of household, contraception use, and geography of residence were found to affect childhood overweight/obesity.

Concurrent wasting and stunting among children 6-59 months: an analysis using district-level survey data in Mozambique

Summary: Recent research shows that wasting and stunting can occur concurrently in children, increasing the risk of mortality. This study aims to investigate the impact of adding mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) on the prevalence and burden of concurrent wasting and stunting (WaSt) and assess the diagnosis of WaSt using a single measurement.

Concurrence of stunting and overweight/obesity among children: Evidence from Ethiopia

Alinoor Mohamed Farah et al.

Summary: The nutrition transition in many LMICs has resulted in a shift in childhood nutritional outcomes, with under- and overnutrition coexisting among children. Factors such as living in agrarian regions, lack of improved toilet facilities, younger age, absence of infection history, and not taking deworming tablets have been significantly associated with the concurrence of stunting and overweight/obesity in Ethiopian children.

Exploring the macroeconomic and socioeconomic determinants of simultaneous over and undernutrition in Asia: An analysis of stunted child - overweight mother households

Jonas Fooken et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phenomenon of a stunted child and an overweight mother (SCOM) living in the same household, finding that it may be caused by mothers consuming high-energy but low-nutrient foods, leading to weight gain in adults and stunting in under-five children. Household-level factors are found to be more important in predicting SCOM than macroeconomic variables.

Prevalence and factors associated with triple burden of malnutrition among mother-child pairs in India: a study based on National Family Health Survey 2015-16

Pradeep Kumar et al.

Summary: The study found that in mother-child pairs in India, factors such as mother's age, educational status, cesarean section delivery, baby's birth size, household wealth status, and place of residence were the most important correlates for the triple burden of malnutrition. Mothers with a secondary education level were more likely to suffer from TBM, while mothers with higher education levels had a lower probability. Additionally, mother-child pairs from richer households had a higher probability of suffering from TBM.

Differences in risk factors associated with single and multiple concurrent forms of undernutrition (stunting, wasting or underweight) among children under 5 in Bangladesh: a nationally representative cross-sectional study

Mohammad Rocky Khan Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This study aimed to differentiate the risk factors of single and multiple concurrent forms of undernutrition among children under 5 in Bangladesh. The results showed that 38.2% of children in Bangladesh suffer from undernutrition, with 19.3% having multiple concurrent forms and 18.9% having a single form. Key risk factors for multiple concurrent forms included low birth weight, children aged 24-35 months, and being in the lowest socioeconomic quintile, while single form risk factors included children aged 24-35 months, being in the lowest socioeconomic quintile, and low birth weight. Factors like parental education, father's occupation, children's age and birth order were identified as differentiating risk factors for the two forms of undernutrition.

Summary: This study conducted in Kersa, Ethiopia revealed high prevalence of wasting, stunting, and underweight among children aged 6-59 months. Factors associated with these malnutrition indicators include age, household water treatment, gender, cough, maternal education, maternal occupation, and maternal body mass index. Interventions targeting these factors are crucial for addressing child malnutrition in the region.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of child stunting concurrent with wasting or being overweight remained low and stable over a 6-year period in rural Uganda. The intervention, which included maternal education on nutrition, hygiene, and child stimulation, appeared to reduce the prevalence of concurrent stunting and being overweight over time.

Pooled prevalence and associated factors of chronic undernutrition among under-five children in East Africa: A multilevel analysis

Getayeneh Antehunegn Tesema et al.

Summary: This study conducted a pooled analysis of DHS data from 12 East African countries to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of chronic undernutrition among under-five children. The results showed that chronic undernutrition remains a significant public health issue in East Africa, with factors such as maternal education, household socio-economic status, and birth characteristics influencing the odds of stunting. Interventions targeting rural residents, improving maternal health education, and promoting health facility delivery are crucial for reducing child chronic undernutrition in the region.
