What Works in Implementing Patient Decision Aids in Routine Clinical Settings? A Rapid Realist Review and Update from the International Patient Decision Aid Standards Collaboration

Natalie Joseph-Williams et al.

Summary: This study used rapid realist review methodology to develop 8 refined theories explaining why and how PtDAs can be successfully implemented in routine healthcare settings. Recommended implementation strategies include co-production, team training, patient engagement, senior-level buy-in, and measuring for improvement. Organizations and individuals can use these key strategies as a practical guide for embedding PtDAs routinely. Further research is needed to understand the role of context in the success of different implementation studies.

Shared decision-making and the nuances of clinical work: Concepts, barriers and opportunities for a dynamic model

Marjolein Moleman et al.

Summary: This study found that healthcare professionals conceptualize shared decision-making in different ways, showing a lack of consensus about its meaning. Five barriers were identified that restrict the maneuvering space for shared decision-making, questioning the feasibility of a uniform SDM model. Individual-focused strategies addressing knowledge, skills, and attitudes were linked to three identified barriers, but systemic barriers like medical issue prioritization and lack of time rendered these strategies insufficient.
