Towards an appropriate ethics framework for Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems (HDSS): learning from issues faced in diverse HDSS in sub-Saharan Africa

Alex Nginyo Hinga et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the ethical issues in HDSS and finds diverse views on community engagement, informed consent, and data sharing processes. Evaluation of two communication tools, slideshow and theater, to improve participants' understanding of a clinical trial in the informed consent procedure on Pemba Island, Tanzania

Marta S. Palmeirim et al.

Summary: Our study confirmed that an ICF alone was insufficient to convey clinical trial-related information. While an IS was beneficial, adding a slideshow or theater did not further improve understanding. Future research should seek to improve these modes of information or explore alternative methods.

Ethical considerations for involving adolescents in biomedical HIV prevention research

Rita Nakalega et al.

Summary: Engaging adolescent girls in biomedical HIV research in Uganda involves ethical considerations such as parental consent, privacy concerns, and disclosure of sexual activity, as highlighted by community stakeholders. Collaboration with key stakeholders, ensuring confidentiality, informing adolescents, providing youth-friendly services, and partnering with youth organizations are critical for ethical involvement of adolescents in HIV research.

Gurus and Griots: Revisiting the research informed consent process in rural African contexts

Richard Appiah

Summary: Researchers working in rural, highly communal, low literate, and low-income communities in sub-Saharan Africa face challenges in balancing universal ethical standards with local customs and traditional practices when conducting community-based participatory action research (CBPAR). It is important to design and promote context-appropriate ethical informed consent guidelines that take into consideration both local customs and scientific principles to ensure respect for individual autonomy while preventing deception and coercion. Collaboration with target communities and stakeholders in the design and implementation of informed consent is essential to safeguard the integrity of the research process in these settings.

An evaluation of the process of informed consent: views from research participants and staff

Lydia O' Sullivan et al.

Summary: Research participants generally had positive experiences with the informed consent process, emphasizing the importance of having enough time and providing follow-up after the study. Most research staff felt confident facilitating informed consent discussions, but expressed concerns about the length and complexity of information leaflets, participants' understanding of the information, and time constraints. Adequate time allocation and consideration of Teach Back techniques are important for improving the informed consent process.
