Challenges in Obtaining Valid Causal Effect Estimates With Machine Learning Algorithms

Ashley Naimi et al.

Summary: Unlike parametric regression, machine learning methods do not require precise knowledge of the data-generating mechanisms. However, machine learning algorithms can perform worse than parametric regression. In the investigated scenarios, ML-based singly robust estimators were less biased in simple confounding scenario but as biased as misspecified parametric models in complex confounding scenario. Doubly robust estimators were less biased, but coverage was below nominal. The use of sample splitting, inclusion of confounder interactions, reliance on richly specified ML algorithm, and use of doubly robust estimators yielded negligible bias and nominal coverage.

Statin and mortality in COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis of pooled adjusted effect estimates from propensity-matched cohorts

Ahmad Fariz Malvi Zamzam Zein et al.

Summary: In this meta-analysis, statin use was associated with decreased mortality in patients with COVID-19, especially among hospitalized patients. The association between statin use and mortality was not significantly affected by age, gender, diabetes, or hypertension.

Use of Machine Learning to Estimate the Per-Protocol Effect of Low-Dose Aspirin on Pregnancy Outcomes A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial

Yongqi Zhong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of ensemble machine learning with augmented inverse probability weighting for per-protocol effect estimation in randomized clinical trials. The study evaluates the per-protocol effect of aspirin on pregnancy. The findings suggest that adherence to a low-dose aspirin protocol is associated with an increased probability of hCG-detected pregnancy.

Effect of statin therapy on SARS-CoV-2 infection-related mortality in hospitalized patients

Lluis Masana et al.

Summary: This study suggests that patients admitted for COVID-19 who were treated with statins had a lower mortality rate compared to those not receiving statin therapy. Lower mortality rates were observed in patients who had been on statin therapy prior to hospitalization, indicating that statin therapy should not be discontinued due to the global concern of the pandemic or in patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Atorvastatin versus placebo in patients with covid-19 in intensive care: randomized controlled trial

Behnood Bikdeli et al.

Summary: In ICU patients with COVID-19, atorvastatin did not significantly reduce the composite of venous or arterial thrombosis, treatment with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or all cause mortality compared to placebo. However, the treatment was found to be safe and a clinically important treatment effect cannot be excluded due to lower than expected event rates.

Statins and clinical outcomes with COVID-19: Meta-analyses of observational studies

Andre J. Scheen

Summary: In univariate analysis, no significant reductions in either in-hospital mortality or COVID-19 severity were reported among statin users compared with non-users. However, after considering confounding factors, multivariable analysis showed that statin therapy may reduce the mortality and disease severity in COVID-19 patients.

Protective Effects of Statins Administration in European and North American Patients Infected with COVID-19: A Meta-analysis

Diletta Onorato et al.

Summary: Statins may have beneficial effects in patients with COVID-19, reducing the risk of severe illness or death. While further randomized trials are needed to confirm these findings, current evidence supports the use of statins as adjuvant therapy in COVID-19 patients.

Association between antecedent statin use and decreased mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19

Summary: The use of statins in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 is associated with a lower risk of inpatient mortality, potentially due to their anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic properties.

Koichiro Shiba et al.

Summary: The article provides an overview of the use of propensity score methods in causal inference, comparing the matching and inverse probability weighting methods and discussing common pitfalls and application tips. Furthermore, the article compares traditional multivariable outcome regression with the two alternative propensity score-based methods, highlighting differences in statistical modeling assumptions and the target population for estimating exposure effects.
